The IRS had about 100k employees at the end of FY 2024 (Sep 30th 2024)

Hopefully we are just getting started here.

Adding a zero to that total would be better.

Eat an elephant a bite at a time, though I completely agree with you the end goal needs an order of magnitude of more firings at a minimum.

This is not insignificant. If 6,000 employees get paid an average of $75,000/year that is $450 million saved per year. But more importantly - if the IRS is able to operate to the same high standard (lol) without these 6,000 employees - then any dollar amount is legitimately being wasted.

It will be interesting to see if audit rates go down. You can already be sure that anytime you need to call the IRS in the future and are on hold for 18 hours it will be blamed on Trump/DOGE even though that is no change from what we already have.

For almost every w-2 employee the government should send a fully filled out tax form that you amend and sign.

The process of sending a blank long form to people and have them fill in the blanks and send it back to you to prove you match the answer they already have is absurd.

Tax code should fit on two pages.

I can't

Not sure why you think I'd even try.

Doesn't take away from the "tastes like chicken" joke

That's a good point. They even have all the 1099-div and 1099-ints. And cap gains statements from brokerages.

I'm hearing it's primarily LB&I, so unfortunately won't have much impact on audits of individuals or small businesses.

Yes, we do it backwards. Probably at the behest of accounting firm lobbyists in the past.

If they collect both all the information AND already have our money withheld, the IRS should be sending us the calculations for standard deduction and we should at most only be procressing for itemization or other exceptions or credits and either submitting that only, or just acknowledging their numbers.

Right now, the iRS basically operates a vast entrapment scheme, perhaps not quite intentionally.

Any reduction in the IRS workforce is a good reduction but I would prefer the Hegseth approach and tell them to cut 40% across the board.

Hopefully this is just a start.

$75,000 is probably nowhere close to their total cost of employment. By the time you add on benefits and other expenses associated with their employment, the cost savings is probably close to double their salary.

My goal is that the IRS is:
-Reduced in size
-Deweaponized against conservatives
-Greatly increased in efficiency and competency.

If you follow Tax twitter, its apparent that the IRS has declined in capabilities, competency, and the simple ability to keep paperwork straight since COVID started. Documents getting certified mailed 5, 6 times and the agency claims they never received a single one.

Firing those 6,000 employees can have that money go towards bringing in updated document management practices.

I don't want a Greece situation where nobody follows the tax code because there is no one to enforce it. I want a better tax code and a better IRS.

Is that amount the same as what were added during Biden's administration? I thought it was that amount or slightly higher.

Either way, the IRS was doing just fine before, so taking the number back to where it was shouldn't change much of anything we've all dealt with.

You know they never got hired, right? This trope makes us sound stupid when it's clear we're just falling for clickbait headlines and not understanding the basic facts.
