When and why did tattoos become so accepted

Stumbled on this reel of Trump telling Baron "no drugs, no alcohol, no cigarettes, and no tattoos. I don't ever want to see a tattoo on you." My dad told me the same and I say the same.

Occasionally I like to watch old NBA games especially from the 90s. Except Dennis Rodman and then Allen Iverson, no players had huge visible tattoos. My older cousin I remember telling me a girl with a tattoo is likely a huge sloot. The stigma of a tramp stamp is gone. It's a huge turn off to me. I see a lot of professional people with them now too. In the next 20 years there will be a lot of old wrinkly people with tattoos. Maybe the trend dies then.

I've never considered a tattoo. If you have one, why did you get it and what is it? Did you grow up like I was being told it's trashy? If so what changed your mind about it?

They might look good on young skin, but if you're fortunate enough to live past age 50? Not so much...

Having "a" tattoo or two has pretty much always been accepted, outside of certain strict religious traditions.

I am kind of curious, though, what spawned the growth of tattoo addiction.

Birdman, Chris Andersen, put a stop to that. He played for Blinn back in the day.

Trump will fix it.

Only one I ever considered was having lips tattooed on my ass, but any time I was near a tattoo place, I wasn't drunk enough.

I'm with you and the Donald. No tats here.

Besides the fact I don't think God is a fan of me farking up his creation (any more than I already have), what a waste of money.

I remember in college in 1991-1992 a small Texas shape with a DoubleT was like $100 with no color, which is just one reason I don't have one. When I look at the size and number of tats people are sporting these days, I hate to try and guess how many thousands of dollars they spent on them.

Very successful. Used to seeing baseball players leave Blinn and be successful. And of course Cam Newton played football there for a year. But the NBA is a tough nut to crack. I wonder if he attributes some of his success to the tats?

I possess the use of language. If I need to "express myself" or "make a statement" I'll use that rather than letting someone else hang their art on me like I'm a walking gallery wall.

No tats. Not a fan of needles, so no piercings either. Sons are 21 and 24, neither have tats. But both their girlfriends have at least one.

Not so long ago, the only people with tattoos were ex-military, ex-cons, biker gangs, psychopaths, and prostitutes. Informal clinical assessment of mental illness included a tattoo count. They were anything but accepted.

Thumbs down on tattoos and piercings......

I got one tattoo in the Marine Corps and regretted it.

About every six months when my son and daughter were growing up, I asked them to raise their right hand and promise they would never get a tattoo.

They never did get a tattoo, although my daughter said the promise wasn't legally binding after she was 18. :-)

If I'm ever aged out of the tech sector, I'm going to look into a tat removal company. It has to be a big business.

Buddy of mine that is covered in ink associates no tattoos with my generation (gen x) and tattoos aplenty with his (millennial).

They all look like graffiti to me but to each their own I suppose. The thought of a beautiful woman (or anyone I suppose) deliberately scarring her body makes me sad.

I've never seen a logo or design so amazing that I wanted it permanently attached to me.

To answer the OP I think tattoos became more acceptable when millennials came of age.

I told my kids that tattoos were like brands and calves are often branded at weaning. So, expect to be weaned completely if you show up branded with a tattoo!
No tattoos on any of my 5 before they were on their own.
Still don't get why anyone wants to do this.

I turn 70 next year. It is very rare for someone of my generation to have a tat.

I did have an uncle who was a WWII Navy vet. He had a tattoo, and therefore, I associated tats with something the older generation did, like smoking.

I wanted no part of it

It's like tats skipped a generation.

One or two tats is one thing. Tons of tats seems like mental illness

Laser tatt removal was the big retirement idea for physicians like 20 years ago. I looked into it and found that many wanted their tattoo removed, but few were willing to pay the price and/or suffer through the pain and time it takes. Because it HURTS and you will still have scars where the ink used to be.

Business name I remember was "Dr. Tatoff". Have no idea if they're still in business.

No tattoos and no piercings but I am a dude. Personally I think they look trashy and I prefer natural women because I think their skin is beautiful.

I'm just guessing but possibly from the rise of R&B / Rap music during the 90s and 2000s. Artists becoming more expressive with the culture eventually accepting it more as popularity rose. Soon athletes began adopting tattoos more and then it penetrates into the average Joe environment.

My theory anyways.

I'm 73y/o and have three tatoos. Pretty edgy guy.

Each one is a tiny dot that helped the orientation of external beam radiation.

Sadly, 10 years later and I can't find them.

My parents are similar to trump.

I suspect tattoos are an outward expression for rebels.

I'm reminded of something I read in the past about not confirming to the ways of this world.

In 1992 when I was at senior, i was at denim and diamonds in Bryan. Danced with a young lady. Bought a few beers. She was getting very friendly. She said you want to see something cool? I said sure. She unbuckled her belt, dropped her pants to her knees, and showed me her new old sarge tattoo on her inner thigh next to her panty line. I broke down laughing uncontrollably. Needless to say she got mad and left.

There is not much more disgusting than a beautiful woman defaced with grotesque graffiti.
