For the ones I know, especially the older ones that grew up poor, they are stuck on the belief from years ago that the Democrat party is the one that helps the poor people and the Republicans are the evil rich people who try to steal from the poor. And many of them have become rich themselves.

As much as I dislike the vague and at times scandalous messaging of the current pope and other church leaders, they have been very consistent and direct on this topic
