Cali probably has more republicans than any other state.
It's true, although perhaps the true metric is conservatives, not actually officially republicans as pointed out in the post above. But the numbers are so skewed, you'd never guess.
That said, lots of less crazy parts to the state than people realize, you just can't find those in the main cities.
When I was working on the coast for a few months in 2022, right after that POS newsom had just put the mask mandate back in place for scary omicron, there was actually push back in the rural communities, like arroyo grande, as well as Pismo beach. I grew to really appreciate Pismo during that trip because I could see that there were people who were absolutely done being ****ed around with. On the other hand, going back to San Luis Obispo (which I used to love, and in one of the most beautiful parts of the country) was incredibly depressing. Covid killed that city. I hadn't felt the fear in the air since leaving SF, but you could almost see it. And the looks in peoples eyes, walking along what used to be the vibrant parts of the city around the mission, were devastating. People actually looked dead inside.
Even though the mask mandates were back in effect during that trip, the mask nazis were kept at bay. I was asked by people going into coffee shops and grocery stores if I wanted a mask. I politely said no, and they moved onto the next. In San Luis Obispo, I was generally the only one in the entire city without a mask, and people left me alone. I honestly don't think people realized that was even an option. They all looked so confused when they'd see me walk in, but no one got actively angry and aggressive with me like when I was in SF a year before. In Pismo, almost everyone was unmasked, so the people at the grocery stores offering masks did it more out of obligation than anything else, but no one enforced it.
