Google maps forces you to go down dangerous paths in bad areas on purpose

They could also easily develop a most scenic route too. They do both of these things because of racism and how it would be bad to send business to the good places. Of course literally no one ever stops in a bad area because that would be utterly stupid and dangerous so this is just willingly putting people in danger for nothing.

I really hate these people.

They've really strayed from their original mission after they dropped their motto of "do no evil." They became popular first because they gave the best results. Now they actively steer you to what they want you to see and are going to lose their place as the top search engine if they keep pushing.

When you get mugged and your wallet taken, just consider it a form of reparations.

Here's a novel idea that will never happen: how about incorporating crime data to allow an option to avoid high crime areas / safest route option.

In the past during rush hour in Houston I've been routed through some back neighborhoods I would not want my wife children driving through.

Good lord, leftists are relentless. They come up with "inequalities" that take some real mental strain to even get to.

Title and first tweet are misleading. They don't intentionally route or force you through bad areas. They put you on the fastest route. Period.

This is just this guy's personal objections to scenic routes.

This prevents underserved individuals from learning of new scenic routes. It's to keep them out of wealthy neighborhoods. It's racist.

If the wealthy neighborhood is faster, they're routed through. If you're going to be sarcastic, at least make sense.

Hate leads to the dark side.

Here's how you beat the system.... Use Google or Apple maps to find a general idea of where you want to go and the most efficient way there.... Then use a physical map or your own head to figure out the scenic way to do it.

Not everything is a liberal conspiracy.

So in addition to the fastest route we're upset Google isn't putting its finger on the scale for what they deem is the "most scenic" in any given route?

Waze does the fastest route, Google does not. Waze, despite being owned by Google, is a lot better at this than Google maps.

Guys,

When I'm on road trips here's what search terms I use to keep Google in the nice areas:
-Chik Fil A
-Bucees
-Trader Joes
-Major hospitals outside of city centers

If glancing at a map with those searches doesn't give you an idea of what is safe and what isn't I can't help you.

Good plan but not foolproof

-Trader Joes

Trader Joe's 11683 Westheimer Rd, Houston, TX 77077

Certainly worse neighborhoods but no one is wearing Lululemon in there.

[EDIT] Google street view is a little misleading. Their neighbor is no longer, "Ebony - House of Vibes". It has closed and is now UMI Sushi & Sseafood Buffet.

They both do, but differently.

Waze is very aggressive with trying to shave time. It is constantly looking for alternate routes based on crowd sourced data.

Google Maps is a lot less aggressive, though still focused primarily on speed. It will not reroute you unless there's a significant time savings. It also weights intersections with stoplights or stop signs to avoid them and keep you on a more consistent route. Sometimes this comes with a slight penalty, but that kind of depends on whether or not you make lights correctly. It's also supposed to keep you safer and be more fuel efficient, but ultimately it's a question of making a more consistent and reliable travel time projection.

I could swear there was some kind of 'avoid the hood' routing a while back, like mid-2000s maybe. If so I guess it wasn't a google thing!

Absolutely, but it's also tried to get me killed with a few unprotected left turns coming off a side street!

My grandparents did this. When in college riding to lunch with them on the weekend we took some of the most circuitous and longest routes you can imagine to traverse Houston. In the 90s so they were doing it by memory. Rice to a Red Lobster (chuckle) on 290 was a hoot.

Fond memories.

Just come up with your own map. Really, don't use google maps.

Do it by memory and do it by feel.

And then sue Google for directing you through a bad neighborhood, that they knew was "bad", but navigated you through it anway (fully aware of the dangers) because "racism"

Somebody needs to find an entrapment angle to threaten them with.

I mean, what street thug isn't going to be tempted to rob or assault a few suburban Karens that are taking Google's woke recommendations?

I lived in Chicago back in the early 2000s when Ags played ND. There was a Yell Practice at a bar at Division and Elston (about 1.5 miles) from all the downtown hotels.

When it was over, there were tons of people milling around waiting for taxis. A bunch of Ags decided screw it, only 1.5 mile to downtown, let's walk it.

Only problem was that Cabrini Green (Aka some of the worst public housing in Chicago) was between the Bar and the hotels.....Back then, it was a hardcore area still. My girlfriend and I saw what was happening took up a position and started warning the walking dead to be careful. I am hoping I saved a couple Ags some headaches that evening.

Local knowledge is important.....
