Is the halo around a Vegetarian/Vegan diet now tarnished? Look at the end of the article on line stating that vegetarian women are a third more likely to suffer hip fractures.

Meat is essential for warding off depression and anxiety, a top nutrition expert has revealed, sending a blow to veganism.

Dr Georgia Ede, a Harvard-trained nutritional and metabolic psychiatrist, studies the relationship between what we eat and our mental and physical health.

And despite the health halo that vegan diets have been given over the last few years, she claims that giving up meat could be detrimental for mental health.

'We're used to hearing that meat is dangerous for our total health, including our brain health, and plants are really the best way to nourish and protect our brains.'

'But the truth of the matter is that it's actually that's upside down and backward.'

Dr Ede said that while getting enough protein has long been a concern surrounding vegan diets, eating meat is about more than protein.

'It's actually less about protein and more about all of the other nutrients that are inside meat,' she said. 'You can get your protein needs met through a vegan and vegetarian diet if you plan it carefully.'

Proteins are made up of chemicals called amino acids, which build and repair muscles and bones.

While animal products like eggs, meat, cheese, and Greek yogurt are high in protein, it can also be found in vegan options like lentils and broccoli.

'But many of the other essential nutrients are much more difficult if not in some cases impossible to obtain from plants,' Dr Ede said.

She noted that meat is 'the only food that contains every nutrient we need in its proper form and is also the safest food for our blood sugar and insulin levels.'

These nutrients include vitamin B12, omega-3 fatty acids, zinc, choline, iron, and iodine.

Vitamin B12, for example, helps with the formation of oxygen-rich red blood cells and DNA. However, it has also been linked to regulating mood-boosting serotonin, and low levels of serotonin have been linked to increased risks of depression and anxiety.

Additionally, a review in the journal Frontiers in Pharmacology found that lower levels of zinc were associated with depression, as zinc can reduce inflammation in the brain.

Several studies have suggested that meat eaters have better mental health.

A 2021 systematic review of 18 studies compared those who do and don't eat meat. The research included 160,257 participants ages 11 to 96 (53 percent of whom were female), including 149,559 meat eaters and 8,584 meat avoiders.

Of those, 11 studies found that meat-free diets were linked to worse mental health outcomes. One of those studies found that vegetarians had a 35.2 percent chance of developing major depression, compared to 19.1 percent for meat eaters.

Warning to vegans: Diet of meat, eggs and milk is healthier than plant-based foods, major review finds

Vegan diets are 'less healthy' than including meat, eggs and milk in your meals, a major review has found.

Additionally, vegetarians had a 31.5 percent chance of developing an anxiety disorder, compared to 18.4 percent for meat eaters.

One study published in 2022 surveyed 14,000 Brazilians between 35 and 74 years old and found those who followed a vegan diet were twice as likely to be depressed even if they had similar nutrient intakes to carnivores.

And a meta-analysis published in 2020 and including 160,000 meat-eaters and 8,500 meat-abstainers also found those who cut meat from their diet were significantly more likely to be depressed.

Despite gaining a health halo over the years, emerging research suggests that vegan diets could have other lasting health consequences. ......

Whether you believe in an all-powerful deity, and his/her design, or that nature dictates things, etc., as humans we have been omnivores... forever. Meat, plants, nuts, fruits...we are supposed to eat it all.

Also notice, since the big push for alternative diets, the influx of food-based allergies. I'm 52, a 70s baby, and never had a classmate with a peanut allergy, gluten allergy, none of that silly bull***** And now? You have entire schools prevented from having PB&J.

What.

We ARE meat. Of course eating meat is more likely to meet our total nutritional requirements. That is intuitive, but it is good to know research supports it.

I don't fault hyper empathetic people for taking the hard road and going through all the extra trouble to try to not eat meat and still be healthy, but it the rest of us should have the right to do so.

So are cows and many other herbivores. That's a horrible argument to justify eating meat.

Research is necessary to prove vegetarians wrong.

If cows ate meat, they would not need such a large and sophisticated digestive system to derive nutrition from their diets. The simplest way for one animal to get what a generic animal needs is to directly absorb what another animal has already collected in its entirety.
It's harder to be a herbivore insofar as gathering the correct balance of nutrients and such, and digesting it all and then biologically manufacturing that which is not present with one's own enzymes.
It's easier for carnivores. What they need is all right there in the prey, "pre-packaged." And at high density. It just needs to be caught.

This is very interesting information. I've never thought that there is such a connection between meat and mental health. I have tried different thighs in my life, and of course, I tried not to each meat for some time. I have chronic anxiety and depression from time to time, and I can say that I didn't notice any difference. Therapy and sometimes pills help me to get better, and not meat. Maybe it has some influence I will not go against professors and some researches and so on, but I don't think that the influence is so significant. But now I am working on a paper about mental health, and I will definitely include such info there. The half of the paper is ready, and this page https://papersowl.com/examples/mental-health/ I found some time ago with essay examples about Mental Health helped me a lot to decide what to focus on. But after reading this info about meat and mental health, I have to add some paragraphs about it because I think it's really important.

A few decades ago people from India that had settled in the UK began getting sick and anemic. They were eating the same diet more or less as they were in India. And it was a mystery for a short time as to what the cause could be.

It was later discovered UK food laws prevented the large number of insects from making their way into the rice and veggies normally consumed by this population and therefore these people were lysine deficient.

Or in other words everyone needs a little meat in their diet.

I will stick with beef and chicken but you get the point.

Can we call something only 4% of Americans partake in as having a "halo"?

I don't know about American stats, but veganism has fallen by 29% in Europe since 2019. Vegan companies have been struggling for a while now.
