Any idea why he wasn't on the 747 (or whatever the military variant name is) to Brownsville yesterday? Can't remember the last time I saw the president not use a 747, outside of the various HMX helicopters that is.

Just a guess, but I don't think Brownsville has an airport runway to support a 747 (distance wise).

Maybe Brownsville field is too short. Most air traffic to valley is to Harlingen - old air force base there

May have been a runway length issue.

That is not entirely unusual. They occasionally fly on a 757 and even a G3 depending on length or runways and airports abilities to handle large aircraft.

Neither of those reasons would apply to Corpus. But it does happen.

Edit- He flew into Brownsville. I am sure it was runway length

They fly on the 757's sometimes. The issue is the support equipment. (Typically a couple C-17's and such for vehicles etc.)

Snark response would be that it has shorter stairs, and burns less jet-A so smaller global warming impact for those with such religious concerns.

Most likely the Brownsville airport either couldn't handle a 747, or the USAF decided a smaller aircraft would be a better fit, even if the airport could technically handle it.

It is actually fairly common for the a president to fly on the C-32A (Boeing 757-200) or the C-40C (Boeing 737-700 BBJ) depending on where he is going.
"If you will not fight for right when you can easily win without blood shed; if you will not fight when your victory is sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival. There may even be a worse case. You may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves." - Sir Winston Churchill

Harlingen does.

Corpus and Kingsville both have a NAS, so that would be easy. Then a ride in Marine 1.

My guess would be the stairs are too tough to manage. He'll be flying something with a drop down ramp going forward. For safety…

I would have loved for them to give the runway a try. I am pretty sure that it can handle a 747 carrying the president of the United States easily. If not, my bad...

Maybe he couldn't climb the steps. I've heard he has trouble there among other places.

When he flew to Dallas a few weeks ago he took the 757 because Love Field isn't big enough for the 747.

Only Harlingen has a runway long enough for a 747 to land. Whenever Clinton or Bush would come visit the RGV, they always landed in Harlingen and would take Marine One to other places

So... The flight crew that typically fly the 747.. Do they maintain ratings on the other fixed wing platforms in the fleet?

Love can handle the 747 and it has been used there in the past.

Better question is why did he go at all. He can blame the Republicans from DC or Delaware . It's the same BS either way. That would have made his climate change Nazi's happy, no hydrocarbons burned.

Harlingen does.

Corpus and Kingsville both have a NAS, so that would be easy. Then a ride in Marine 1.
Corpus also has KCRP which would handle it...But, it's a little bit of a flight down to North Matamoras.

But, Brownsville's longest runway is 13R/31L and is 7399 ft. 747 requires 7500-8000 feet.

. This is the correct answer. Anything to avoid a falling incident. He should be wearing a fall belt at all time.

747-200 requires a minimum of 10,000 ft to take-off, or in a ferry configuration (min. fuel, no pax or cargo) they are capable of rotating with just 7,500 ft. On the other hand, landing can require as little as 5,000 ft.

Brownsville's longest runway is 7,399 ft. So a CV-25A could safely land there, taking off would be akin to when a C-17 accidentally landed at a small commenter airport instead of MacDill AFB in Florida in 2012.
