'Betrayal': Arizona GOP Chair Jeff DeWit resigns after recording of 'offer' to Kari Lake

Quote:

Jeff DeWit, a former Arizona treasurer and Trump adviser, resigned as chair of the state GOP on Wednesday following the release of an audio recording in which he offered Kari Lake a lucrative job if she quits her U.S. Senate race.

In a written statement, DeWit said Lake's team had threatened him with the potential release of a "new, more damaging recording" unless he resigned immediately.

"I am truly unsure of its contents, but considering our numerous past open conversations as friends, I have decided not to take the risk," he wrote. He added that he hopes she stops attacking him so he can return to the business world, "a field I find much more logical and prefer over politics."

Wow... so he doesn't just resign. He resigns and says it's because she probably has recordings of him saying worse things than we've heard already.

Bye scumbag. Although I would like to see him redeem himself by providing names to a more friendly administration so they can be taken out.

He says
Quote:

"I question how effective a United States Senator can be when they cannot be trusted to engage in private and confidential conversations."
Private and confidential conversations regarding bribes?
No, I don't care what CNN or MSNBC said this time

If he prefers the business world to politics, why did it take this release to convince him to go back to the business world?

If he's in good standing with the establishment, he will be hooked up with a good corporate gig. There doesn't seem to be much difference between government and large corporations these days. Elites seem to jump between them with ease without much merit.

The man has a point if he's telling the truth. Most people would be done if a friend betrayed them by recording and releasing an out of context snippet of a private conversation.

Who on earth hasn't said something privately over the course of years that if publicly released without necessary context would make them look awful?

Snippet - out of context? The lengthy recording is neither of those.

The guy was told to deliver a bribe. He should have said no. Period. But this is American politics today and its rampant.

Gut the entire GOPe to rid ourselves of unscrupulous people. Shocked at how many Ags support this filth.

I wasnt referring to that one but the one apparently now threatened to be released.

If Lake has more stuff, we need to hear it. Also, we need to know who was making the offer and why.

How long did this black widow hold this information before deciding to release it publicly and what were the reasons she finally made her choice and why. Her track record is sus.

I don't care. The country is circling the drain in part because of this kind of nonsense. Sunlight is the best disinfectant.

Fair point. I heard an interview yesterday where she said the recording was 11 months ago, but she's been talking about the substance of it publicly since then. That said, I'm no Lake fan either. All of it can be bad.

Imho, one has to be in office to take a bribe to then misuse authority. To take payment to decide to run for office or not is a private business deal. It can still be unseemly and corrupt but it isn't quite the same as being paid to use a position of authority to do something or other.

I am glad the fact this actually happens was exposed..

I think it's funny that he kept referencing forces "back east". Is that a common saying in Arizona ? When you are geographically located in AZ that doesn't exactly narrow it down. 85% of the USA is east of you

If this is how he operates the AZ GOP, then yes, he should be out.

But let's not get too far out in front of our skis and forget Lake has apparently been recording him (and who knows else) for months and only releasing it when it's to her advantage. If it was so reprehensible when it happened, why did she wait 3 months to release it? And how is a threat to release more "secretly recorded private conversations" not just as awful or even worse?

If you listen to the whole conversation, the AZ GOP felt it would be better off going with a different candidate for the Senate. They wanted to come to an agreement to have her step aside and allow a different candidate to run. Yes, they were offering a payment, but who knows what else? Maybe the option to be Communications / PR Director for the AZ GOP to allow her to run messaging for the Party. She's been very good at reaching people even if folks don't agree with everything she says.

Now contrast that with what she did...exposing private conversations purely for her benefit. Not because she wanted to shine light on shady practices within the party, but because it benefited her. Even Vertias doesn't sit on "undercover recordings" this long.

Not advocating bribes, but if this is how Lake is going to behave when she doesn't get her way, she's no better than those she's pointing fingers at for being corrupt.

I truly hope for the sake of the country that Trumplicans have their crap together in AZ as far as fundraising and GOTV. Because it sounds like with this incident the fall out for the AZ GOP will be the full take over by Trumplicans.

As far as presidency, house, and senate. GOP has no room to spare. They have to win elections in AZ. They can't let it fall away from "purple" like they have in CO and NM. And in fact they need to be able to do want the GOP did in Florida and Ohio. Push "purple" to Red.

So far Trumplicans haven't shown an ability to raise money and recruit candidates that can do this. But it's a young movement, maybe they will learn. The conservative movement certainly did in the 70s in order to give us the 80s and 90s.

Yes. But that was a movement based around a set of policy and ideas.

The MAGA movement is based around Trump and people he has endorsed.

Different dynamic.

A similar example: let's ignore what the wired informant has to say about the act of a drug pusher one year ago. That will shut down about half the drug trafficking cases currently pending in all the courtrooms across America, all in one fell swoop.

Sounds like Arizona has much bigger programs than Kari Lake being too opinionated and tied to Trump. Even before Trump, they elected some crappy leaders both at the state and national level. They need some actual conservative leadership, not people who brushed elbows with the McCains.

The RNC cancelled debates for Donald Trump.

the RNC was considering issuing a document that states all the elections are over with because Trump is the "Presumptive nominee" after 200,000 people voted.

who is the GOPe again??

First of all, that guy would be laughed out of any business meetings I've ever been in. He sounded like a real idiot. I pictured Ben Affleck's negotiation character from good will hunting.

The bigger issue for me (and it's nothing new for any of us) is that politics has truly turned into this "back scratching" culture. I'm sure it's always involved that, but the degree to which the GOP has bent over just tells me it's because their leaders are just like this guy.

Not qualified. No backbone. Completely lacking character and just looking to get paid.

So i actually applaud it happening. I'd like 100x more of these to happen in the leadership ranks. Starting with Ronna

He may be listed as GOP, but ultimately we may find out he is actually DNC.

Either way, he is 100% deep state or tooled from, which does not discriminate between red or blue.

Find it hard to be "representing the people" when you have proof of the swamp but only use it for blackmail... and sensationalism in the media with speculation on a worse recording.

Guess the justification is it got rid of a swamp monster already, so no reason to push further?

I just think it's important for all people to understand the depth of the swamp.

THIS. THIS. THIS.

The guy was Chair of the freakin Arizona GOP. To take that job means you support all candidates and the party as a whole within the state.

What you do NOT do is act as broker and bag man for attempts to remove candidates from the race.

We saw last week Ronna McDaniel advocating for Haley to leave the race. She's entitled to that opinion; BUT, she should resign as RNC Chairwoman if she wants to express it.

As Republicans, we cannot complain about the elitists of the left if we condone an elitist mentality in the top positions of our own party. Good riddance, Mr. DeWitt.

Follow the money. NRSC chair is Senator Daines from Montana.

Quote:

When Senate GOP campaign chief Steve Daines trekked to South Dakota earlier this month to introduce former President Donald Trump at a rally, he also had another mission: To sell the former president on one of his prized Senate recruits, Montana business executive Tim Sheehy.

The cross-state journey to give Trump facetime with the establishment-backed Sheehy is an essential part of Daines' monthslong gambit to forge a strategic partnership with the former president as he tries to oust red-state Democrats. It's also an attempted course correction for the National Republican Senatorial Committee after Trump's obsession with his election loss in 2020 and his endorsements of shaky candidates helped relegate the GOP to the minority for the last two cycles.
Quote:

With a very favorable map in front of them, Republicans' success hinges on whether Trump marches in the same direction of the NRSC, which under Daines is taking a far more heavy-handed approach in primaries than it has in years. If Trump endorses Daines' preferred candidates like Sheehy or West Virginia Gov. Jim Justice, or at least stays neutral, it could make all the difference for the GOP's chances.

"I have a strong relationship with President Trump, a strong relationship with Mitch McConnell," Daines said in an interview at his NRSC office. "The common objective they both have is to win control of the United States Senate back and put it back in Republican hands."

I'm glad she recorded it, and apparently other exchanges, but I bet conversations with Lake are going to be very circumspect going forward.

All of her friends, business acquaintances, political friends and foes, etc. have to be wondering what else was recorded. From Lake's POV record it all and use it when advantageous.
