America's richest 1% and Ivy Leaguers say the rest of the country has TOO much personal freedom and want to ration food and electricity, shocking poll finds | Daily Mail Online
Quote:

America's top earners have been blasted as 'wildly out of touch' after polling showed their views differ sharply from regular voters on everything from climate change to personal liberties.

A survey has found that 'top 1 percent' earners and Ivy League graduates are much keener on banning and rationing cars and air travel in pursuit of climate targets than the rest of the country.

They also expressed an authoritarian streak nearly six in ten members of the elite say there's too much personal freedom in the US, many times more than for ordinary voters.

Quote:

The survey comes amid a rise in populist sentiment that crosses political lines everyone from Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump to leftist Occupy Wall Street organizers have railed against the elite 'top 1 percent.'

Pollsters contrasted the views of regular voters with two surveys last September of 1,000 members of the elite identified as those with postgraduate degrees living in cities and earning more than $150,000 a year.

Scott Rasmussen, the president of RMG Research, which conducted the poll, called them an 'urban academic elite' that is 'extraordinarily influential in government, corporate America, and the philanthropic worlds.'

Quote:

The survey delivered these remarkable findings:

The elites are better off financially than the rest of the country three quarters say they are doing better now than in the past, compared to just a fifth of everyday Americans.

The elites support the rationing of gas, meat, and electricity to cut emissions of planet-heating gases more than three quarters of elites support such a Draconian policy, to which two thirds of regular Americans are opposed.

Their climate-fighting aspirations do not stop there. Elites also support banning many modern conveniences, from gas stoves, to air conditioners, non-essential air travel and gas-guzzling SUVs. Regular voters would by wide margins keep all of these, the survey showed.

Elites are much keener on the US government than others. Fully 70 percent of them trust federal officials to 'do the right thing most of the time' more than twice the nationwide average.

They also like the man at the top of it, President Joe Biden. He gets an 84 percent job approval rating from the elite roughly twice as high as it is for the general public.

The same goes for schoolteachers and education chiefs. Two thirds of the elite say teachers should decide what kids learn at school. Regular voters are more in favor of parents deciding what happens at school, perhaps reflecting concerns about the politicized race, gender, and sexuality lessons in class.

Regular voters are either cool or sour when it comes to lawyers, lobbyists, politicians, and journalists. Among the elites, which includes members of these so-called 'talking professions,' opinion is much more favorable.

Nearly six in ten of the elite say there's too much individual freedom in America double the share for all Americans.

Of course, they're not including themselves for such sacrifices because they're too important.

History has shown that it didn't really work out for the elites when the slaves stormed the castle, some even lost their heads in the chaos. I hope history repeats itself soon.

Except it's backwards in this case. It used to be the poor coming after the rich. Now, it's the rich libs coming after the rest of us.

If I lived in a "no gas stoves" city so the environment can be saved, I think I would buy a big a** wood burning or charcoal BBQ pit and cook out every day.

Wrong. We just want to be left alone, same as always. Now instead of poor people empowering elite Dems to take our money, it's rich libs doing it. The fight is the same as far as we're concerned. We just want to be left alone and keep more of what we earn. Your ideology can't abide that, sadly.

you sound like a marxists which is not the same as a conservative. class warfare from a historical perspective is nothing like what is occurring today. they flat out say they want us gone, eat bugs , etc

I know you have to remain intentionally obtuse to maintain your fragile ideology. We conservatives don't want to raise taxes on anyone, even rich libs. We want them to somehow put aside their compulsion to control their fellow man via gov't and more recently social media and other institutions. It's unrealistic, but I too have a dream.

They should ALL give up their status and privilege FIRST before seeking to impose constraints upon others.

The issue isn't classes existing. It is those at the top setting up structural rules that protect themselves from having to compete, and that limit opportunities and social/economic mobility. If there is one place where aristocratic elites across the politicsl spectrum agree sll too often it is "for me, but not for thee".

the problem is that when you expand it to the rest of the world, 99% of American's ARE the 1%.

They want to control us as much as the elites. America, despite the growing number of laws and regulations, is still one of the most free countries on the planet. The American "elites" and their partners in crime the rest of the world's 'elite' (and China) want to take that away.

Exactly.

I would be fine with banning tobacco, marijuana, booze, Teslas, Rap music, and any number of other things I don't consume.

But I agree, the elitists are fine with bans on everything, because some animals are more equal than others. They know darn well those things will not be banned for themselves.

Lol you remember the TEA party that rose at the same time right? Both were major political movements on both the left and the right that were centered around issues with the elite in this country screwing over the little guy.

The difference is that the 99%ers ideas were accommodated, while the TEA party's ideas were declared backwards.

Surprisingly (sarcasm), the 1% have more control than ever now after major steps have been made in the past 15 years to accommodate the 99%ers.

we should just be so thankful that we have benevolent billionaire overlords like Bill Gates who can afford to worry about overpopulation and changing the weather for us. He knows governments need to take over farming and agricultural production from local farmers for humankind's own good.

While conservatives and liberals debate nonsense meaningless crap hoisted on them to distract them, they are slowly all starting to come to realize that while they vastly differ on just about everything, they share in the same fate awaiting them devised by the actual drivers of everything from government policy to social sentiment.

Where liberals still fall short is that they believe the government is on their side trying to help them. Reality shows that the government teamed up with the banking oligarchs over 100 years ago and has been using the middle class as their pawn ever since. And the second they don't need you, they will toss you aside. We're coming up on a period unlike the last 100 years which featured the orchestrators of our destruction slowly and methodically deteriorating the middle and lower classes through the devaluation of the currency. Anything different, or any transparency, would have created huge negative sentiment and led to revolt. When they start saying the quiet part out loud, you know the next cycle is going to play out different. They no longer fear the mass populace. It's almost time to lock the comrades in the ship as it sinks.
