FAA's diversity push includes hiring people with 'intellectual' and 'psychiatric' disabilities (nypost.com)

As though passengers didn't have enough problems with thug gangs fighting...

"Targeted disabilities are those disabilities that the Federal government, as a matter of policy, has identified for special emphasis in recruitment and hiring," the FAA's website states. "They include hearing, vision, missing extremities, partial paralysis, complete paralysis, epilepsy, severe intellectual disability, psychiatric disability and dwarfism."

What kind of job within the airline industry will a person who's COMPLETELY PARALYZED be able to do?
And yup, I'd prefer my pilot/copilot to have "severe" psychiatric issues.

This is some of the most bigoted stuff I've ever read on this site. You don't want to give a blind and deaf lady a chance to fly an airplane that you and your family are on? Bigots.

I agree it is stupid but don't fall to their level. Your pilots and first officers do not work for the FAA.

So mechanics, air traffic controllers? What could go wrong?

Someone who is completely paralyzed could very likely work phone, data entry, reception, etc. You also have to remember this is the FAA, not the airlines.

Then why the push to look for them?

I expect that a paralyzed person with the necessary drive to be a good employee can apply to the job now.

Saw a guy at the local Post Office, there to inspect their Passport records. Was in a wheelchair.

Agree. No way to say this without it sounding weird, but I like it when I go to the Palladium and the guy that scans my tickets is in a wheelchair. They obviously have the drive and desire to work and contribute to society as opposed to just sitting at home collecting a check. This is the perfect job for a person with their limitations. I like to see that they are able to get out and work. It's good for them and good for us as a society to have them work.

I can think of two reasons.

Regardless of what the law says, those people are often discriminated against when it comes to hiring because of their specific disability.

That specific group of people may not know that the FAA is a place that they can work. An initiative like this makes a big splash in the news and could lead to those individuals applying. A person who is completely paralyzed might be a genius at coding or some other job ut never thought they could work at the FAA.

Although not the intended reason, some of the people that are recruited my be on a form of full or partial disability benefits. Working at the FAA could reduce the amount of assistance they need or even get them off of it completely.

The people that don't understand how wealth is generated also won't understand why their own actions have contributed to the decline in their own standard of living.

It really is something to watch.

I think it's more of a push to not exclude these people from the hiring process and make sure they're put into these kinds of positions when they do apply. Also, there are a lot of organizations that help people like this find job placement, so this could also involve outreach with them so they know they can point them to FAA opportunities.

These disabilities are not going to end up in the cockpit.

It's hard to get a class 1 medical.

There are people that can't pass their medical because they had a suicidal episode when they were 12. No way is the faa putting people with severe mental issues in the cockpit.

Maybe some desk somewhere.
