"For all its enormous range of space, climate, and physical appearance, and for all the internal squabbles, contentions, and strivings, Texas has a tight cohesiveness perhaps stronger than any other section of America," famed author John Steinbeck wrote in his 1962 travelogue, "Travels with Charley: In Search of America."

"Rich, poor, Panhandle, Gulf, city, country, Texas is the obsession, the proper study and the passionate possession of all Texans."

It would've been tough, but we would've made it work out. Gotta give Sam Houston his props, but he was an agent of Andrew Jackson to win our independence simply to bring us into the Union.

Elections are when people find out what politicians stand for, and politicians find out what people will fall for.

Uh, 1862 ???? It was undecided and at the end of that year the Confederacy had the upper hand militarily.

I think you meant 1865. In cases like this details matter.

The goal from independence was always to get admitted as a state. The debts and financial troubles the state had made it a fiscal necessity as well.

The Pulitzer-prize winning history book "Cry Freedom" discusses this heavily. At different points in the war, each side thought victory was imminent or defeat was inevitable. Plus, Davis had to fight tooth-and-nail to hold the South together. Lincoln had to deal with Union traitors who tried to work through Canada to undermine Union war efforts. The war was a seesaw until Grant made his way east from Vicksburg. Even then, things got a bit hairy.

It's been a good decision so far. Like all families, we have some issues we need to sort out.
If you say you hate the state of politics in this nation and you don't get involved in it, you obviously don't hate the state of politics in this nation.

it may have been better for the United States and for Texas

if Texas remained it's own Republic and never joined the Union.
