I wish that were true, but it won't be. In September, a young Chihuahua made a home at one of my neighbor's house. He fed it but did little more than that. When my neighbor went to Mexico City for five days, he asked me to feed his cats and this dog. I fed the cats, but due to the hot weather, I took the doggie home to stay cool. He bonded with my dogs and of course, with me. He became my dog.
He grew on me despite having bad habits from being left behind by someone. He liked to find bones, bread, or other discards and bring them home from our walks. His worst bad habit was taking off whenever he liked. It really irked me to lose him, only to find him minutes later, always running. He learned to stay with the 'pack' but his maverick nature kept him doing his own thing.
To make a long story shorter, on Wednesday evening, Dec. 20, we went for our walk. I am able to walk my dogs off leash because I taught them early what I expected. On our way home, when I gave them the okay to cross the street, 'Booger' ran to play with another neighbor's little dog in their yard. I decided to allow it, knowing he would come home when he was through. The sun was going down and I hadn't heard from him, so I went looking for him. He wasn't at my neighbor's house, so I walked to the corner, looked around, and found him lying in the street, dead. He apparently ran to play with the dog across the street and got hit by a car. I gathered his soft, limp body and brought him home to show my other dogs what happened. I was devastated.
I had so many plans for him that were erased in a moment. I dug the hole, kissed him goodbye, took his last picture, placed him in the hole and covered him with dirt.
I had him for a total of 98 days. This was about the most difficult episode of losing one of my dogs because the others died with the vet's needle. Christmas will not be what your video will be at my house.
Sorry for the sad news, but I'm living it every moment of the day.
