MRI mishap: Patient shoots herself in buttocks after magnet triggers handgun

Quote:

A patient ended up shooting herself after her handgun accidentally fired while she was in an MRI machine, according to a report from the Food and Drug Administration.

The report said the incident happened back in June, but the report didn't indicate which hospital the incident occurred.

The FDA said a 57-year-old woman was brought in the magnet room. The handgun was attracted to the magnet, which caused it to fire.

The woman was shot in the right buttock area, the report said. However, the wound was described as small and superficial.

Don't pack and scan. It could end up as a fatal attraction.

Of all the stupid places where metal detectors are already used, I would think the office with an MRI would be a good place for one.

As a former hospital in-house counsel: "Yes, yes it does." Open up the checkbook.

From the report:
"The site reported that prior to the exam the patient had undergone a standard screening procedure for ferrous objects, which includes weapons specifically, and answered no to all screening questions."

Ridiculous spin. Some people are about to get termed.

I guess if they missed it, and the patient forgot...the whole thing seems silly.

I just had an MRI done. I had to change into a hospital gown and leave everything but my glasses in a locker. Was asked multiple times about metal in my body too. It seems really dumb to have the patient walk into the MRI room fully dressed and with all their belongings, doesn't matter how they answered questions about 'ferrous objects'.

If they died, I'm Curious which category this would have gone in: 1. Killed by healthcare or
2.Killed by firearm

Working in Healthcare is hazardous. Mostly because the population is incredibly stupid and can't follow simple commands.

Not only that but the one thing that the technicians that run MRIs tell patients is to remove all metallic objects that they may have on them.

And people wonder why patients are told to undress and put on a backless gown. Because they "forget" to leave that loaded handgun back in the changing area.

I find it interesting that we're all here trying to throw shade on the hospital staff while a 57-year-old grown human being brought a gun into an MRI room, violating, like, 10 different common sense rules. If she had died, it would 100% qualify for a Darwin Award.

If I ever have to have an MRI, I'll be concerned since I have stainless steel surgical suture within me -- enough to set off metal detectors.

I have asked about it and about the strongest answer I've got is an "it depends".

How fat do you have to be to forget about the handgun stuffed up and tucked under a roll?

I'm just assuming here...

My last MRI I changed into gym clothes
