With the recent announcement that General Welsh will be moving from his interim status to permanent status as president of the university, I am wondering what the general opinion of f16 is regarding this decision. Personally I'm torn. I thought he was a good choice and that he seemed to "get us," which I think is incredibly important, but, on the other hand, he did recently make a concerning comment about DEI in a hiring situation. What say you?

Anyone who think DEI is a good idea is a complete moron and unfit to lead a bake sale much less an institution of higher learning.

DEI is cancer brought upon our society by mentally ill leftards.

He endorses and advocates for DEI.

Draw from that what you will.

Good article in The Blaze today on this topic. This guy is blatantly disregarding state law:

No, just another leftist who is doing exactly what was predicted would happen, keeping DEI around, just under the radar.
"If you will not fight for right when you can easily win without blood shed; if you will not fight when your victory is sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival. There may even be a worse case. You may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves." - Sir Winston Churchill

Welsh needs to learn he doesn't work for Obama anymore. You have a different set of priorities than the ones you led the Air Force under. Our State and our University is a meritocracy. It needs to be this set of achievement variables that hires are made.

If he came out and said he would comply with both the letter and the spriit of Texas Law regarding DEI and racial preferencing, I would enthusiastically endorse him. He has not done so.

I don't think racial preferencing is the 'hill he would die on', but he needs to clearly state his intention to follow the State of Texas guidelines.

He's a leftist piece of trash who thinks he can sound reasonable by prefacing why he believes in woke marxist bull**** .

He refers to certain people as "diversity" choices based on undisclosed attributes and says they are deserving of being selected when there is a "tie". He says he has no regrets making these types of decisions. And that you should just "feel" and "know" when your organization is diverse.

Also, he is proud of fighting lawyers and policies on demographic quotas during his time at the Air Force Academy. He believed they did not have enough females enrolled so he tasked his administration to expand the quota. Once the restrictions and policies on quotas were lifted, they were still unable to get past 22% enrollment, so they arbitrarily forced it to 30%.

Additionally, this new President stated that "All Aggies" deserved to apologize to the (would have been) Dean of Journalism that was ousted for being a woke propagandist.

This guy is an idiot and a buffoon. He makes Young Look like a genius by comparison.

The video I linked is from 7 years ago. He was giving seminars on diversity and inclusion almost a decade before it was mainstream. He was on the forefront of this bull**** and greenlighting it at our university.

I know what he said about the hire...but as far as DEI, I felt he did a great job taking down those things put in place prior and relating to DEI. The offices, job postings, trainings, etc. are all defunct now. Granted, the state requires this, but from what I can see at the university, he's not promoted anything remotely like what was at a time.

That doesn't mean he's not going to hire people on the left (or perceived that way) if they add value to the university.

And I did get on the receiving in of DEI years ago when I was competing for position that went to a diversity applicant (and was ultimately told as much). So I'm no fan. But things have gotten incrementally better and I've not seen anything from Welsh to indicate otherwise.

I think he's an honorable man and I'm willing to give him time before I make any knee jerk opinions.

Meh...

I work for TAMU-CC and changing a Position Description is a PITA.

I doubt anyone has gone and scrubbed every single PD that's getting put out (hint: you can't just change it yourself and release it, it has to go through a process that takes weeks at the shortest and months at the longest).

Hell, the 2 I'm putting out this week for some engineers probably has some of that babble in them still.

It doesn't mean I'm trying to subvert the DEI ban...

Yep, anyone who pushes such vile divisive filth is garbage, and a racist...and the enemy of my half white/half Asian offspring.

I don't care if he "served". Most 4-star generals really "served" themselves for the most part anyways to get where they are.

Most of us did more to serve this country by actually contributing to the economy and raising good families and not being a lifelong tax drain.

Thanks to everyone who has contributed. I had a feeling I should be disappointed in the hire and y'all confirmed it. Time to cut off my giving again and let the regents know that anyone who supports DEI is not acceptable as the president of our university, especially since it violates state law.

Texas A&M's interim president, General Mark A. Welsh, is openly defying the order. Welsh has not only supported racially based hiring in the past but continues to think DEI bans are not in the "long-range" interests of society and that the policy will not change what the university does very much. He has signaled to his faculty that DEI business can be conducted as usual.
I've heard good things about him, but if this and the examples in the article are true, that's bull*****

They're "hiding" it, but not really, in job listings:

Quote:

An IT manager must be a champion of "workplace diversity and inclusiveness." A senior graduate student specialist must "work to enhance the diversity" of the students. An assistant professor of marketing must have a "demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, and inclusion activities." A technology specialist must promote"inclusion, diversity, equity, and accountability." Nearly every application at Texas A&M-Commerce must "have an understanding and knowledge of multicultural and diversity issues."
The liberal slant starts with Sharp and then it trickles down.

Being a white male myself with a bunch of crazy past experiences in life that I've endured, none of which would be remotely appropriate to talk about in an interview, I can't help but think this pyschopath would consider me a "tie" or perhaps even "privileged".

How you see people does not equal reality. Only a fool thinks they have the ability to understand someones "diverse experiences" based on what they see in front of them. Moreover in a professional setting.

Screw this guy!

People should write state officials about their concerns and show Welsh's comments. Ask the questions we are asking here - will Welsh follow the law?

Texas A&M System Guidance on Senate Bill 17

GENERAL (RET.) MARK A. WELSH III
INTERIM PRESIDENT

September 7, 2023

Members of the Aggie Family,

As you are aware, the 88th Texas Legislature passed Senate Bill 17 (S.B. 17) during its regular session to prohibit diversity, equity and inclusion offices and initiatives at public universities, effective Jan. 1, 2024. On Aug. 16, The Texas A&M University System approved revisions to System Policy 08.01, which provides the framework for System members' implementation of the requirements of S.B. 17. Since then, the System has released a set of frequently asked questions to further guide the university's implementation of S.B. 17.

As previously shared, the university will ensure full compliance of S.B. 17 by Jan. 1, 2024. We are currently taking the following initial actions:
  • Staff members previously supporting the Office for Diversity have been reassigned, and this office is closed.
  • Hiring practices and required training are being updated, where applicable, to align with official guidance.
  • University policies and related documents are undergoing revisions to ensure compliance.
