Douglass Mackey, known online as "Ricky Vaughn," was sentenced to seven months.

I mean are you okay with someone trying to subvert the voting process like that? His sole focus was a disinformation campaign to stop Black people from voting

It was a freaking joke. A joke that Democrat influencers have used as well. If you honestly think there are a lot of Democrats that go to a conservative Twitter guy who is a cynical comedian for information on when to vote I don't know what to tell you. As I said though Democrats have done the EXACT same joke about "Democrats vote on Tuesday, Republicans on Wednesday" and no one has ever been charged with a crime. Until this guy.

I thought it was a decades old joke that I've seen a bunch of times in different forms on the Internet mocking certain political groups or other groups, often variations of something like "In order to reduce wait times, Republicans vote Tuesday, Democrats vote Wednesday."

The idea being Nobody is really stupid enough to believe it is true but the joke being that one group is being impugned to be that stupid.

It seems the DOJ purposefully ignored the long history of this mockery, be it poor or even bigoted humor, and implied that it was actually intended to fool people. The DOJ itself seems therefore to be bigoted and presumes the targeted group really is at least partly that stupid or gullible.

He put out a fake number and told people they could avoid lines by texting their votes to it. That shouldn't be and isn't OK.

The defense in this case should tell you a lot about his behavior. They didn't argue his behavior was OK. They argued his lies weren't "believable enough."

https://www.justice.gov/usao-edny/pr/social-media-influencer-douglass-mackey-sentenced-after-conviction-election

The ad stated: "Avoid the Line. Vote from Home," "Text 'Hillary' to 59925," and "Vote for Hillary and be a part of history." The fine print at the bottom of the deceptive image stated: "Must be 18 or older to vote. One vote per person. Must be a legal citizen of the United States. Voting by text not available in Guam, Puerto Rico, Alaska or Hawaii. Paid for by Hillary For President 2016." The tweet included the typed hashtag "#ImWithHer," a slogan frequently used by Hillary Clinton.

For those of you wondering, this is what the ad said

If this had been a Hillary supporter posting stuff aimed at Trump supporters, DOJ wouldn't have done anything about it.

This is nothing more than the continued harassment and rapidly accelerating criminalization of any action by conservatives.
"If you will not fight for right when you can easily win without blood shed; if you will not fight when your victory is sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival. There may even be a worse case. You may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves." - Sir Winston Churchill

I'm ok with it. It amounts to trolling and should be protected speech. If you can lie about military service and awards, why can't you lie about voting practices? And it's not his fault if people are gullible enough to believe him instead of doing their own research. Are we going to make satire illegal now?

And if we are going to have a voting process that gives no ****s about chain of custody or voter verification, I find it really hard to care about someone throwing out disinformation to stupid people. The process has so many holes that it subverts itself, but I don't see you calling for tighter security and procedures.

If people are gullible enough to fall for a "disinformation campaign" such as vote by text, then said people should not be voting.

The same goes for the X votes on Tuesday and Y votes on Wednesday jokes.

but pressuring twitter, meta, and alphabet to wipe proof of Joe's corruption off the face of the internet before the election is no big deal. ...and the Biden campaign urging intel community to sign off on a letter tricking people into thinking the proof of corruption was "russian disinformation", knowing that it wasn't, and then handing it over to pravda media arm to propagate to the masses... that' was no big deal.... a dude who posted a meme though! to prison!

This. It is actually a great filter for elections. If you are that stupid or lazy you shouldn't be voting.

I guess I'm a bigot, because I think we're at the point where people can be tricked into believing something like this. The joke hasn't changed, but people are stupider and more lazy. You're probably not tricking people who have ever voted or would have voted if not for being tricked.

But there's no question in my mind there are people who believe they voted via social media in the 2016 election, even now.

Yes, anything to beat Democrats, they are my enemy. Also, Democrat efforts to undermine voter id also stops blacks from voting.

Here are the two images. That's a little more that just saying Republicans vote on Tuesday Democrats vote on Wednesday. They also had evidence he was working with others and he was suggesting the importance to limit "Black Turnout". Something like 4900 people texted the number he had included in the pictures.

How far removed from vote by mail, is vote by text? It doesn't seem THAT far fetched to me, which is why we can know that vote by mail ought not to be an option.

You mean the entire FBI which parroted her russian propaganda 'dossier' to influence the election? Or the 51 'former intelligence officials' who lied about Hunter's laptop being Russian disinformation?

My biggest problem with this is that Gen Z is snarky AF. They screw with each other, the whole world for that matter, in this fashion. I could see either of my teenage sons posting something silly like this, knowing it was a joke and fully expecting anyone else to know it's a joke.

You'd probably want them jailed too though so my point is probably in vain.

There is the The Enforcement Act of 1871 (aka the Klu Klux Klan Act)

The Ku Klux Klan Act made it a federal crime to deny any group or individual "any of the rights, privileges, or immunities, or protection, named in the Constitution." To enforce the law, the President could suspend habeas corpus, deploy the U.S. military, or use "other means, as he may deem necessary."
