Curious to hear opinions on this subject; Im generally very against traffic tickets from cameras and big brother watching us even more. However, traffic on i35 has got me reconsidering.

Is there a limited use situation that would be acceptable or even received well for yall? My big one is semi trucks in the left lane (corridor of i35 etc is left lane restricted for trucks), It's such a simple rule to follow and enforce, yet I constantly see them in left lane abreast with trucks also in lane 2 and 3 while pissed off people try to pass in lane 4+. I had a CDL... its not hard to follow these rules.

I feel that rather than targeting speeders etc with the cameras, maybe tackle it from the other angle? Make Texas roads better by targetting bad habits that cause traffic problems. Texas driving is appauling and seems to be getting worse. The bad traffic pisses people off and makes them more aggressive/do stupid things.

Ie Reducing people clogging up passing lane (lane 1) would be a huge improvement. People passing on the shoulder after lanes have merged is another one (which also probably contributes to all the damn safety barriers getting hit constantly ((tax $$$ wasted)).

Roads seem painfully under patrolled, and bad drivers with an ever increasing leash is just making everything worse.

No. Put officers out there and ticket drivers breaking the law. Cameras that generate tickets are unconstitutional, they violate your right to confront your accuser. If you want to amend the Constitution we can have that conversation but we've seen entirely too many states willing to push those limits and I'm just not interested in giving in anymore.
The federal government was never meant to be this powerful.

No opinion on the camera, but I am close to the death penalty for those that hang out in the left lanes while not passing

Don't fall into the trap OP of thinking you are willing to compromise your otherwise solid beliefs for "just one" specific instance.

Once the govt gets their hooks in, they are never letting go.

Stand firm on defending your freedoms, no matter how tempting it is to compromise on just one little thing.

If we're targeting trucks, it's not a big leap to imagine the statists who want this to target everyone else as well. Because if the cameras are present, they can do whatever they want.

Thanks, but I'll pass.

The Hubs recently received a toll road fine from Austin. He drives a one ton black PU truck. When he called about it, the picture associated with that fine was a gold VW. He had been in Austin for the day a few months before and was racking his brains trying to figure out when he might have even come close to a toll road.

A few years back, I received two toll road fines. My vehicle hadn't left my rural county for over a year.

Such BS.

I've never thought anyone was in favor of traffic of speed cameras. But then I thought no one was in favor of civil asset forfeiture either.

I absolutely abhor people who keep going in lane 2 to jump over into the exit lane at the last moment when there is a line of traffic properly waiting their turn to exit. It clogs the non exiting traffic up creating rear ending danger and is essentially telling those of us waiting patiently that your time is more valuable than my time so I am going to cut in front of you.

But I will not give up freedom to fix this, have officers sit and write tickets.

I'd argue that it would be way more beneficial than the red light tickets or speeding tickets. Pretty sure there has been multiple studies that have shown slow traffic is more of a problem on the roads than speeders.

What exactly is the "privacy" you're protecting or worried about losing with these cameras? Tbh, i really dont think "privacy" exist anymore anyways, but, this is a public road, there should be little expectation of "privacy"and driving is a privledge not a right.

4th amendment is a better discussion here... but not curious about a discussion of why it cant be done with current legislaton, more interested in what people think about use (when limited) and why...?

Is privacy about having pictures of your car/plate? Pictures into the cabin of your car? Do you avoid toll roads for the same reason?

Slower, do you mean people who drive below the min speed limit or people that drive the speed limit? In either case please name these studies.. Because what you say does not make sense.

So what about this...? What about an officer physically sitting in a booth there, would you be okay with that, and them mailing a ticket?

The problem with officers sitting there in vehicles and pulling people over is that it will make the traffic just as bad as what you currently have.

Tldr; Youll just have rear-end risk because of the stupid rubber necking instead of the current ******* driver issue.

They don't really bother me. I don't se it as much different than the change from people collecting tolls to it being automated. It's just not worth wasting the mind space over.

Pretty easy to dispute, but it is annoying... im all for them increasing the requirements for the toll road fine/charges, have gotten a few myself.

I see your point, but a bad system can be improved... is incorrectly getting sent violations your only apprehension for this idea?

I remember this story from about 10 years ago.. Maybe longer and I think it was in CA.

CA had a bunch of cameras and if your front tire touched the stop light line, you received a ticket in the mail with the picture of the driver. Until a congressman got caught with one of these photo tickets with his mistress. I do believe that incident triggered the cease of this practice.

Left lane is for passing only. There is about a half million of the signs throughout the state.

It doesnt matter if your going over, under or exactly the speed limit... Generally, if youre getting overtaken on the right then youre doing it wrong.

Stop being lazy, its not hard to change lanes, left lane isnt for cruising.

And you doesnt mean you specifically, its directed at anyone that has this behavior.

As for studies, I'll look for them and followup. These arent hard concepts to understand though, so little worried why its hard to follow?

Slower traffic causes faster traffic to have to switch lanes to avoid and overtake the slower traffic. Most accidents occur due to the numerous lane switches that occur. Add to that the irritation that the passing drivers have make them more aggressive, impulsive and prone to be less careful.

this is a close one for me. Nothing more infuriating being stuck in a long line of traffic waiting for the truck going 8 under the speed limit to crawl past the truck going 9 under.

During a practice session the first time they had a NASCAR race at Texas World Speedway south of Aggieland, there was a DPS trooper on top of the hill parked next to the railing with a radar unit in his hand. I talked to him for a few minutes and he said he'd love to go out and try to catch a racer.

I support cameras for intersection violations. People are running red lights at an alarming rate. Officers cannot watch every intersection. There are other states that utilize cameras. If you dont want big brother watching you, start by ditching your online and wifi service.

Blame Biden. The overwhelming majority of our State Troopers are on the border. There are virtually no troopers available for regular and routine patrolling and monitoring of our State Highways and Interstates.

By comparison, I just drove too and from Ohio to take a look at a project site for next spring. Never saw a single DPS Trooper from Houston to Texarkana. Arkansas, Tennessee, Kentucky (not as much) and Ohio, I probably never drove more than 30 miles without Google alerting me, "There's a speedtrap ahead." and seeing a Trooper parked in the median or with a car pulled over. Weigh stations were open too, unlike Texas.

I will never understand why some people think their desire to break the law by speeding takes precedence over my desire to break the law by driving in the smoother (left) lane.

And just to echo or add a little. The law states you have to move to the right to allow faster vehicles to pass even if you are at or above the speed limit. Why? Because as you say it reduces the amount of accidents, congestion, and confusion.

But the average Texas driver can't find the rear view mirror or understand the simple concept above. They think if they are at or above the speedlimit the other guy should just deal with it.

Studies have shown that red light cameras don't reduce overall accidents at intersections. They reduce front-side accidents a bit, but increase rear end accidents.
