Why is this funny? This is 100% the future of transportation. It's like laughing at that guy who bought a bicycle while thinking nobody will ever stop riding horses.
It is if you're under 60. I just got back from Phoenix and these are everywhere. If you use Uber, Lyft or other ride services, you will absolutely be in self-driving cars within a couple of years. They've reported over a million rides already with zero accidents in that market.Tony Franklins Other Shoe said:Not my future.SantaLucia said:

I am sure they are all electric too. Must show proof of vaccination and booster status to unlock door for ride.torrid said:Salute the self-driving cars.SantaLucia said:It is if you're under 60. I think it's highly likely that my profession (law) sees to it that anyone selling these things gets sued to oblivion every time they cause an accident. We are a long ways away from the point where self driving cars can operate in an uncontrolled environment without regular screw ups. What you will probably see, instead, is freeways built for self driving technology, where every driver has to turn over operation to a system where the cars communicate with each other, and maybe with some kind of central traffic control. Absent that, there will be too much liability exposure.SantaLucia said:It is if you're under 60. I just got back from Phoenix and these are everywhere. Perhaps civil disobedience will be needed sooner than later vs. our coming AI overlords.Quote:

The laws, regulations and even the legal profession will adjust. I'm sure people threatened lawsuits from "having" to use seatbelts, too. I'm some did sue alleging damages and/or inconveniences caused by using a seatbelt. Everyone has adjusted and society is better for it.twk said:I think it's highly likely that my profession (law) sees to it that anyone selling these things gets sued to oblivion every time they cause an accident. Unlikely. We weren't as litigious then. There really was a time when people took responsibility.SantaLucia said:The laws, regulations and even the legal profession will adjust. I wouldn't mind commuting or long distance travel in one.
The current iteration are fairly easy to disable or trap due to their collision avoidance sensors and logic being easy to manipulate.
