https://www.msn.com/en-us/lifestyle/lifestyle-buzz/gen-z-has-a-new-type-of-relationship-called-a-situationship-and-it-could-be-the-future-of-dating/ar-AA1h1mR6?ocid=entnewsntp&cvid=14a44e2f4c2643cdafa0f7022075852c&ei=14

Another day, another *******ization of the English language. In this case we have people engaging in semi-lengthy sexual relationships but want something that sounds better than ****-buddy without all of the perceived constraints of an actual relationship.

The one common thread of most of these contemporary terms and re-definitions is that they always seek to excuse or normalize something negative to make some deviants feel better about their deviancy or just to confuse people in general.

I'll bet that 95% of the people in "situationships" are either BSC, liberal as hell, or more likely, both.

That word sounds stupid in that usage as it is entirely vague.

If we're being honest, the notion of "friends with benefits" has been around basically forever. I myself may, or may not, have had a friend my freshman year of college that I "studied" with on a weekly basis.

I believe that on the crazy/hot matrix this is called the Fun Zone.

And as noted by the creator of said matrix, the goal is to move to a better zone (Date and Wife zones).

I think it is what they used to call an "open relationship". But it seems everyone knows that means your relationship is a non-committal sham. So they invent a new word that means the same thing but sounds, I don't know, more legit? Serious? They just want to get away with sleeping around with whoever they want, but feel better about it and not be looked at as some kind of ****.

The difference is "situationships" don't seem to require a motivation for zone upgrades:

Quote:

"In our research, we define a situationship as an ongoing sexual or romantic liaison that lasts six months or more that one or both parties don't see as going anywhere,"

I kind of feel now it is openly celebrated whereas back in the day both parties always kept it on the down low. Just my perception, though I am probably incorrect.

I actually think you're spot on... it's not that this is something new. But creating new ways to frame it and make it socially acceptable is definitely a more recent phenomenon.

Yes, but the proof that there is a negative connotation in those terms is right there in the article headline where they call this a "new" relationship. It isn't new at all. So you have to ask yourself why create a new term for something that isn't new?

You're not incorrect. You are absolutely right.

There used to be a saying that was common place. Discretion is the better part of valor.

Modernized example. Boebert is going thru a divorce. She's relatively young and probably suffering from the drought in affection. Understandable. But keep that sh** behind closed doors. It's called polite society.

Not sure whether to be sad or jealous of today's young people. Probably a little sad. The idea of easy, convenient sex sounds appealing on the surface, but its probably a bad fast-food version of what it should be in a legitimate relationship.

"open relationship" or "**** buddy" both worked perfectly fine for this.
I always thought that "open relationship" was a couple that shared a life together but allowed each other to step outside the relationship, or marriage, sexually. Don't get me wrong, always believed and still do that is a terrible idea and a sham.

F buddy was something completely different. And literally what it describes.

OP, you can probably try staying out of other people's business.

I know you hate it. But we have freedom in this country and people can do whatever they want.

You have an issue with this. The Religion Board is there for you.

it's already going great today.

Twice.
This just put this image in my head of that episode of Friends where Ross hasn't got any in a while and then does, and he's walking down the street in an obvious good mood and some old gals are watching him and one says to the other "someone got some last night". And Ross stops, pivots, flashes two finger in her face and says "twice".

Except you're, nevermind.

Agreed, the two concept are barely related, much less being the same thing.

Per the requirements of the article, situationships are 6 months+. That situationship with yourself might result in tissue damage, pace yourself.

My beef is with the linguistic absurdity more than the moral one. As noted plenty on this thread, people sleeping around and not committing has been around forever and would hardly be worth starting a thread over. But coming up with a new word for it to obscure the truth is the metagame for bad behavior, and is frequently a political one. This is in the same ballpark as all the LBGTQ whatever insanity.

They are different but share one common attribute along with "situationships", non-committal sex. I would say "situationships" are the intersection region of a "****-buddy" and "open relationship" venn diagram.

Sounds like friends with benefits. Nothing new with that idea, and nothing new about young people creating new slang words.
