Russia failed to land a few days ago, but India has succeeded.

India becomes the fourth country ever to land a spacecraft on the moon

Quote:

India has landed its Chandrayaan-3 spacecraft on the moon, becoming only the fourth nation ever to accomplish such a feat.
The mission could cement India's status as a global superpower in space. Previously, only the United States, China and the former Soviet Union have completed soft landings on the lunar surface.
Chandrayaan-3's landing site is also closer to the moon's south pole than any other spacecraft in history has ventured. The south pole region is considered an area of key scientific and strategic interest for spacefaring nations, as scientists believe the region to be home to water ice deposits.

The water, frozen in shadowy craters, could be converted into rocket fuel or even drinking water for future crewed missions.
India's attempt to land its spacecraft near the lunar south pole comes just days after another nation's failed attempt to do the same. Russia's Luna 25 spacecraft crashed into the moon on August 19 after its engines misfired, ending the country's first lunar landing attempt in 47 years.
As Chandrayaan-3 approached the moon, its cameras captured photographs, including one taken on August 20 that India's space agency shared Tuesday. The image offers a close-up of the moon's dusty gray terrain.

Germans got there first. Which explains the craters.

Landing on the south pole is a very big deal. My understanding is an incredibly difficult feat of engineering, and far more complex than all previous landing by us and others that stayed on the equatorial regions.

There was a scifi horror movie Apollo 18 made a few years back that was set on the south pole of the Moon. Damn rock creatures are mean.

Seriously, congratulations to India. That is a big feat just getting there. Landing in the rough terrain of the south pole is even more impressive.

This slams the gate on the Pakistanis getting to the moon.

It's interesting they only spend a couple billion dollars a year on it, but have seemed to build up a nascent domestic industry/capability which should be good for them. Globally, spend (including private/commercial) is over $500 billion a year now for stuff in orbit and beyond.

Pakistanis will feel they need to oneup on India and will now prepare to land on the Sun.

So, when people say India is like 50 years behind the US... this is an example?!

54 to be exact.

Well, depends.
India is the FIRST to land on the South Pole of the Moon. The US has some catching up to do to emulate that.

India becomes fourth country to land on the moon, first on the south pole, with Chandrayaan-3 spacecraft

Having known many a guy with ex-wives, it's quite possible India won't.

57 years since the US first landing with Surveyor 1.

54 years since boots on the ground...a clock that is still ticking for everyone else.

Right now I think we are still odds-on favorite the next person to set foot on the moon is another American too.

There are two types of countries in the world. Those that use the metric system and those that have landed a man on the moon

Yeah, but the Apollo engineers mostly used the metric system for their work and then converted it to English units.
