This is the rub. No matter how the debate turns out, "any two-some Newsome" (stolen from Michael Savage) will unanimously be declared the winner by every media source on the planet. But does that mean he "won"?

socialists will know that Newsom won. anti-socialists will know that DeSantis won. pravda msm already knows who won before it starts. further, i don't think a middle or a swath of swayable independents really exists anymore in this environment.

Corporate media has already written their stories on how Newsome crushed DeSantis.

I know DeSantis was talking to Hannity and at the end of the show they said "yeah let's do it". That's not the same as Newsom accepting, and I'd be shocked if Newsom agreed to Hannity moderating the debate. The left knows they can get a lib moderator and that the right just has to accept it.

It will be like the Bernie vs Cruz debates most likely. Cruz absolutely destroyed Bernie on facts but people that agree with Socialism of course said Bernie won. I do think you underestimate just what an opportunity this could be for DeSantis though. There are so few real discussions like this, even on TV with pundits you don't really have a "Crossfire" type venue anymore.

BTW, there will be a lot of Dems who watch this that NEVER go on Fox and NEVER listen to Republicans. If you don't think this is an opportunity to Red Pill some folks I don't know what to tell you. The only concern is the hard core Trump folks that are so loyal to Trump they will actually root for Newsom thinking it will help their guy when the reality is if DeSantis does poorly it will actually hurt Trump in the long run because he cannot articulate issues like DeSantis so anything that Newsom "wins" on are things that will hurt Trump in the General. They just don't seem to care about winning the General though.

This is the problem with liberals, though. They will just claim a slightly higher death rate for covid, and that's it to them. They WIN.

What they won't see is A) all cause excess age adjusted deaths, B) Economical impact, and C) whether some want to say it or not, the price of freedom. You can't simply debate covidians who won covid with only covid numbers, because to them, bottom line covid numbers are the only thing that matter. Freedom of choice will always mean something to the rest of us, however.

Yep, Newsome is smooth and should not be underestimated. Hannity wasn't ready and Newsom was patient and got his punches in. Newsom will come in with lies and BS surveys and studies that can be objectively proven false but not in a debate very easily. That's why he would absolutely destroy someone like Trump and why even DeSantis will need to be on his game.

Honestly I just hope Hannity doesn't try to "help" DeSantis too much, dude has never been very smart and is used to winning arguments by talking louder and cutting to commercial break while using colorful language. When that is up against a calm and rational sounding person they lose.

Sure, you think Debates are won on a fair evaluation of who made better arguments? Debates are won on soundbytes and appearances as much as real discussion. Newsom will make a few mini speeches and that is what he will run with and places like MSNBC won't show the response or they will cut it off in the middle of a larger statement to reinforce their point.

The reality though is this is about showing Republicans who can make strong arguments against the Left and hopefully to get a few folks in the Middle or even a few Dems to watch it in long form and go, "Hmm, this DeSantis guy makes a lot of sense. I don't agree with him on everything but I would be ok with him being President." Most elections go to the person that is hated least more than the person who is liked the most.

DeSantis: "Gavin, your Californian government has spent $20 billion over the last 3+ years on homelessness but only about 700 people have been helped. The rest of the country doesn't want you to spread this problem nationwide"

Exactly . One of the reasons I don't want this debate to happen. DeSantis needs to focus on trump and biden.

They'll both get something out of it. DeSantis gets to show himself in a bigger stage and against an ideal liberal foil. That should help him with the moderates and independents looking for reassurance that they should support him.

Newsome also gets to put himself out there, but since he's not running this cycle, he has less to lose if he does poorly.

Thanks to what maga does when they go to a Desantis eventt, he will likely have them, led by Trump, tearing him down in real time on social media.

Still, it should be a great look into the future of politics once the two walking dead geriatrics are no longer around in politics.

DeSantis needs to raise his profile. This gets his name out there. It may be his undoing, but you can't "lose" in the championship round if you don't make it past the semi-final.
