Seems like they are trying to build momentum behind the McElroy story. Look at this nothing burger of a story that has already resolved with extremely vague details and no comments from anyone.

What is the point of this story?

I'm sure the professor who's job was in jeopardy cared. I'm sure everyone would be fine if it were left wing administrators/politicians coming down on conservative professors.

The Texas Tribune is trash. Our next move should be removing the funding we give them and call them what they are: a progressive mouthpiece.

In light of recent events, I think it's relevant.

With the hold that the legislature has on state universities and with the current slate of idiots we have running this state, this is the way it's going to be.

To take a shot at A&M. Nobody can even definitively tell what was actually said about Patrick by the professor. Was it normal political criticism or was it something over the line? The article doesn't say and yet they wrote the article without knowing all the facts. But that's never stopped the Tribune from taking a shot at our University.

The matter has been investigated by the University and the professor is back at work, end of story.

If this is true sounds like it could be a huge non-issue.

It's about Dan Patrick. It's made for the politics board.

not true. The trashbin waits until like the 30th paragraph to say that she said Patrick is responsible for opioid deaths

In a statement provided by Copelin, the A&M system spokesperson, Alonzo said "her remarks were mischaracterized and taken out of context," but she did not confirm exactly what the comments were.

"She added that she had no issue with how the university handled the situation," Copelin said.

Buried this way down in the article.

Had they told the professor they were going to investigate the comments, you might be right. I think the fact that she was suspended and told she could be fired makes this newsworthy and a bad look for A&M. The proximity to the McElroy issue, regardless how you feel about it, is a bad look.

The professor is probably exaggerating and there were probably other factors leading to her being suspended

Dan Patrick sucks and needs to be gone

The Tribune is looking for clicks

A&M also needs to be cautious moving forward or the are going to have a hard time bringing in good researchers and professors no matter what side of the political isle they fall on

Do you disagree with the below statement:

Copelin said the university's handling of the complaint against Alonzo followed standard procedure and appropriately updated the relevant lawmakers on the investigation's progress.

"The investigation into the matter was a reasonable step to take, particularly after UTMB issued a public statement 'censuring' one of our faculty members," he said. "In fact, it would have been irresponsible not to look into it."

This is exactly the impression this headline is meant to give. She wasn't ousted, she was fully reinstated after an investigation found no wrongdoing.

I said there should be no issue looking into the comments. She said herself that she was worried for her job and the comment in quotes was "….pending investigation re firing her."

That's my issue. That is a bad look and if the political roles were reversed this board would be on fire.

I'm sure it made her nervous, it would have made me nervous too, I'm glad A&M did the right thing and reinstated her.

Or, more accurately you should say some snowflake politicians - Danny Goeb Patrick and Dawn Buckingham - tried to get an A&M professor fired. This professor made some comments that apparently were so offensive - no one remembers what the comments were!

This kind of meddling by politicians is disturbing and I am glad the reporting is taking place!

Dan Patrick has never had an original thought in his life. Can't wait for that idiot to get canned. I'm about as conservative as it gets too

As a former Poli Sci grad, talking **** about the government is like 90% of a prof's lecture.

Quote:

A Texas A&M professor was suspended after accusations that she criticized Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick over the state's opioid crisis.
And yet, nowhere in the story is exactly what was said. So, it's speculation that this was because "she criticized Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick over the state's opioid crisis" right now...

UTMB sent an email to student saying the below so I don't think you are correct here.

Quote:

A few hours after Texas A&M started looking into the complaint, course leaders at UTMB sent an email to students in the class saying Alonzo's comments "about Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick and his role in the opioid crisis" did not represent the opinion of the university.

What did you want A&M to do? She was a guest lecturer at another university. That university released a public censure statement. Yes, you are going to look into it. They did and came to the conclusion she did nothing wrong and is still employed.

The issue here isn't Texas A&M, it's the reaction by Dan Patrick's office and ironically the University of Texas System that released a censure state immediately without an investigation.

It's pretty strange that the article focuses on the actions of Texas A&M when it was UTMB that immediately acted against the prof after getting pressure from Patrick.

I think the verbiage "re firing" is a very bad look. Yes, investigate, but it appears there was a potential jump to a certain conclusion and once it was investigated, it was not much. To me, that's the bad look.

Perhaps UTMB should not have issued the censure without investigating it further.

Call me crazy but I don't like that a member of the Lt. Gov's office can just text/email Sharp and say hey, this woman said something negative about me and our Chancellor suspends her immediately.

Obviously i'm sure there is more nuance but it doesn't read well.
