Methodology: Layoffs.fyi, which tracks industry downsizing, ran the full names of laid-off U.S. tech employees, taken from opt-in lists, through a gender name analyzer.
  • Caveats: The analyzer isn't perfect and the opt-in lists may have a bit of selection bias.

The big picture: Tech layoffs were less "tech-y" than you might realize, hitting hardest the parts of these companies that are typically more female-dominated like human resources, recruiting and marketing.
  • Almost half of HR people and recruiters were laid off in tech, compared to 10% of engineers and 4% of salespeople, found a separate analysis of Layoffs.fyi data.
  • These are the teams (they're usually smaller) that are typically first to get cut in a round of layoffs since they're viewed as less essential.
  • Meanwhile, tech companies have also pared back their diversity, equity and inclusion staff.

This is delusional. Women don't have the risk tolerance or desire to found or join young start ups, and often early stages companies are in need of hard to find niche STEM skills to build and invent new technology, where the skill set often requires many years of experience in STEM fields that most women voluntarily drop out of before they reach such a level of experience.

These women just don't exist. Period. If they did, they'd be getting hired. Lots of young companies are desperate to hire women but can't find qualified ones who want the job.

"Hey we have 10 employees and can only pay you 1/2 of what you'll make at FANG. Don't worry, we have 14 months of runway before we run out of money for payroll. So… do you want to work insane hours for stock that you might not ever be able sell? And also be surrounded by 10 nerdy guys all day?"

"Yes" said no women ever.

I can remember the purge of men, especially disciplinarian ex coaches from elementary schools, for the more "nurturing, feel good, understanding" women. Once they were established, I didnt seem women bemoaning the loss of men leading the elementary schools, except for the women teachers who wanted to teach reading, writing and arithmetic and wanted turds disciplined and not rewarded at the principals office. funny what happens when you are large and in charge.

Women were actually disproportionately affected by choosing jobs at tech businesses that aren't core functions of those businesses. This was a self selection issue.

I work for a software company. Women don't sling code for the most part or do technical support. They do jobs like hr, technical writing, product management, sales, customer interfacing, etc

So when it comes time to downsize, they get hit harder.

The same people constantly saying women are getting screwed all the time with jobs, pay, in general, are the same ones who are okay with men competing in women's sports and pretending men can have periods and get pregnant as well as erasing terms like breast-feeding, birthers, etc.

The imaginary 'war on women' that isn't real being actually being trumped by the 'war on women' that is real.

Males make of 93% of inmates in prison. Males get significantly longer prison terms than similarly situated women and that sentencing disparity is significantly greater than any racial sentencing disparities.

Liberals are very selective on when equity should and should not apply.

[Note, I am not saying there is anything wrong with men making up 93% of our prison population]
