Can't wait to see pictures of Republicans being hand in hand with the BLM folks as they celebrate this holiday as one.
There are in fact two things, science and opinion; the former begets knowledge, the later ignorance. Hippocrates

Juneteenth is one of the better holidays that we celebrate. I would celebrate a billion juneteenths before 1 pride day. Recognizing the day slaves in Texas were freed is a fairly worthy cause; I just hate how politicized and liberal it has become.

I'm off but not celebrating. Did we just cancel each other out?

Seriously, for Texas, I love this observance. Learning you are no longer a slave seems like a pretty big deal.

Nope, just BLM folks and the party that enslaved them.

Hasn't Juneteenth been a Texas state holiday for 30+ years?

Honestly no. Very few even in Texas knew about Juneteenth. Only reason I knew was because my black friends in the small town I grew up in always partied on that day. I can damn guarantee you that lily white liberals had no idea until Trump wanted to hold a rally on that day. That's it.

Yeah, I was wrong. It's been a State holiday for over 40 years.

Juneteenth has nothing to do with the Marxist blm, and anyone attempting to tie the two together is doing nothing but denigrating what the holiday stands for.

Ha! Excuse my ignorance. Did not know it was a state holiday. It certainly wasn't celebrated.

There were a total of 3 black kids in my class of 87. I've known about Juneteenth since at least late elementary.

We often traveled from Galveston County to Robertson County in Junes to drop either myself or my brother at the grandparents. As long as I can remember if the weekend was close to Juneteenth, there were plenty of people on the road heading to Juneteenth celebrations.

The Brazos Valley is one of the most sensible places outside of Galveston, Houston and deep SE Texas that has a looonnggg history of Juneteenth celebrations.

Yeah - I am not sure I agree with this either. I certainly remember plenty of Juneteenth celebrations throughout my childhood in the 80's in east Texas. Seemed like a good thing to celebrate. I'm not sure what all the apprehension about a Juneteenth holiday is about. It is a holiday that celebrates freedom.

I worked with quite a few black crew members and they brought leftovers to eat when we had time. The food is magnificent! Greens, beans, homemade sausage, pork ribs, brisket. Yum!

Democrats took Juneteenth national because they wanted to associate modern Texas with injustice in ending slavery. December 6th should be the federal holiday for emancipation - but that would force a conversation about certain northeastern states holding slaves even after the confederate states. The narrative must be controlled!

I think Delaware was one of if not the last state to end slavery.

Now, who is it that we know from Delaware. Oh his name escapes me but I think he was actually alive when it ended.

Yep you're right. I had a nice visit several months ago to the African American Museum in Dallas, and one of the docents shared that with all the Juneteenth buzz there has been a lot of misinformation. For us in Texas, many of us grew up learning about it in school and I always knew of it more like a big celebration. I noticed though that nowadays, non Texans are describing it as if Texas was the last, hence making Juneteenth more like a somber day because "not all of us were free until then." But historically it was Delaware and Kentucky who were actually the last ones when the 13th Amendment was proclaimed.

If you really want to boggle people's minds, just tell them that the Emancipation Proclamation was not worth the paper is was printed on.

It freed slaves in the "states under rebellion" but those states considered themselves to no longer be part of the Union. It did NOT free slaves in the Union.

Now some smart guys may say that it still applied since the Union did not consider the "rebellion states" as separate from the Union and thus the laws / proclamations would apply.

But ask yourself, if the Union and Lincoln did not recognize the right to secede, then why did the states have to be readmitted to the Union and under circumstances prescribed by the Union that conditioned the readmittance.

So, the Emancipation Proclamation was a symbolic relic worth less than Confederate currency. But I digress.

East Texas for sure. It's a South East Texas, especially Houston/Galveston. I grew up a small central/east Texas town and it was celebrated in my hometown. Nothing at all wrong with it and glad I got to partake. The apprehension is liberal whites trying to use it to divide the nation when no one in Chicago even knew it existed before democrats made it a focal point in their campaign to creat racism in America.

Agree -
Since the Commander in Chief could only apply his orders to areas that were under his control, his proclamation did not have the same force that the 13th Amendment did.
But it did serve several purposes:
1. It encouraged blacks to rebel/help the Feds
2. It increased enrollment of freed black men into the Federal Army
3. It helped destroy the economy of the South
4. It appealed to many people besides just the rather small group known as Abolitionists -
In the South many asked why they should be drafted to die for rich slave holders -
West Virginia split from Virginia over this very issue.

Edited to add an oldie that fits this conversation...

Yea, I bet there were ZERO unpaid house attendants and groundskeepers in Connecticut after 1848 who were free and enjoyed all the rights of their white counterparts.

The BLM folks are too busy hiding in their mansions with private security paid for by naive democrats than to mingle with the commoners.

Slavery is not over. Millions of people are slaves to our government. We must be honest about the entitlement programs that essentially keeps people in poverty.

We also cannot close our eyes to what is happening around the world. True freedom comes from education and honest democratic society based upon merit and work for those who are able.

If it took until 2020 for people to figure out what Juneteenth is, there's no point in it being a holiday.

The term I heard is "psychological slavery" and it's exactly what the Dem hold on poor people and people of color is. Dems and those who support their antics are either psychological slave owners or psychological slaves.

Not something I would want to be part of and certainly not something to ever be proud of.
