Imagine being signed up for Amazon home services and they believe that you said something mean and so they disable all of your connected devices. This can't be true, can it?

And even if it's not true, I still hate it because it is 100 percent believable

Of course it is. But, Alexa is about setting sales for Amazon through the ordering and notification.features. I don't see the point in blacklisting.

How do you know?

Because, I build way more complex devices and equipment than this "toy". I've got decades of EE knowledge in this field. Alexa could be a "mole", but I really doubt it.

Alexa could be listening to your conversations and storing/processing the "data" but I doubt it. Tests have been conducted on the Alexa devices and there is almost zero network traffic when the device is "idle". There isn't enough memory in the device to store audio waveforms or processing power to analyze the audio waveforms and convert them to small text files to be uploaded later.

Alexa is an on-demand device. She is a simple phone (for lack of a better description) that gets activated by saying "Alexa" and then transmits raw audio files to a server farm that responds to the requests/commands.

In theory, the account/device could be blocked or disabled if a person said a "trigger word", but the free Alexa toy puck isn't listening to you.

Alexa wasn't the trigger. A delivery driver interpreted the door bell greeting as offensive and reported it. An Amazon exec then suspended the account, which in tern caused all of the smart devices to deactivate.

Delivery driver made a report with no evidence and amazon account was suspended. The person has everything on "smart" devices so when their account was suspended, they could no longer operate their home.

driver - idiot
amazon exec - idiot
home owner - idiot for having a "smart" home with echo listening to every conversation.

The racist phrase was overheard by a delivery driver, not the Alexa device.

Regardless, a leftist nutcase at Amazon apparently disabled a user's devices for a week based on bull****.

Its 2023 and people outsourcing they racism to a robot doorbell!

What a time to be alive!

How long do you want to ignore this user?
The story is not that Alexa heard something it interpreted as racist. The story is that a doorbell made an automated comment, "Excuse me, can I help you?" when an Amazon delivery driver dropped a package off. The delivery guy, with ear buds in, heard something he interpreted as racist and reported it as such. Amazon responded by locking accounts and disabling services. The only reason things got unlocked was because the homeowner had other cameras that recorded video and audio. Amazon restored his services a week later without notice, and without apology. A full week of paid services offline, because a delivery guy reported something with no proof or verification, and Amazon required video and audio to prove "innocence" in the matter, and still never apologized for the downtime. Imagine a driver having a bad day, and making a false claim because somebody irritated him a little bit. If this homeowner didn't have video and audio, he might still be locked out.

There's a lot of f***ed up stuff with this story, get the facts straight, or your points will be irrelevant. It should also serve as a warning not to depend on cloud services for your home.

Not so fast my friend. My Google mini is associated with my account. The thing has 1GB of flash memory and 4 cores running at 1.4 Ghz.

It can easily store a few key words, for example the N word, and send a code back to the mother sight to disable my account if it hears that word.

A 3 minute mp3 audio file takes up only 5MB max. This thing has 1GB in flash and almost another GB in ram.

That's not how this works. You're making assumptions based on HW alone.

Do you really think Google is going to purposely break their SW architecture for nefarious reasons? I don't think so, there's no motivation to do so.

I don't doubt it at all. This happened to us just yesterday. We were all sitting around the pool and my wife's younger cousins were telling us where they wanted to move. One of them shared that she wanted to move to Denmark.

Conversation moves on. Mom picks up her phone to check something and there are now links and products for Denmark in her feeds. Her mom was flabbergasted by it because she doesn't know **** about Denmark and didn't know her daughter even knew what it was.

My wife and I have numerous examples of this as well. These devices are listening.
