Or this?

A sonic boom?

Yes, sonic boom from scrambled intercept aircraft.

The question is what was going on with the Citation Bizjet. Possibilities include hostile intent, pressurization failure, or an unauthorized flight by an untrained pilot.

Won't know for a while.

Somebody was worried, or they would not have allowed a supersonic intercept.

A Cessna Citation V for unknown reasons flew over DC and later crashed in Virginia.

https://www.flightradar24.com/data/aircraft/n611vg#3093ec91

The sonic boom was the emergency scramble of at least one F-16 to catch up to the plane.

The radio reference tweet was incorrect although there was training going on so they likely just mistook the permission for the scramble aircraft to go supersonic to be part of the training.

The Hubs grew up on Little Rock Air Force Base. Just asked him the same question and he claimed the same. That was an intercept.

I bet it was a Payne Stewart type of accident. The pilot and all on board were probably passed out or dead from lack of oxygen.

But does the fuel on board back that up for that trip?

???? if on auto, plane will fly the program til bingo fuel. Any inputs that take it out of auto, if crew is incapacitated, will likely take the plane down. As was said, seems like a decompression incident. Pax and crew never had a chance.

Which would be amazing because after the Payne Stewart incident, business jet pilots were trained to immediately put on their oxygen masks as soon as the alarm goes off, or at even the slightest sign of hypoxia.

Another wild speculation would be the plane was stolen and flown by an untrained/unauthorized pilot. Might explain flying over unauthorized airspace and no radio communication

Latest report is that the F-16 pilots saw that the pilot of the Cessna was passed out/not responsible.

https://www.wusa9.com/article/news/local/dc/loud-boom-heard-across-dmv-was-sonic-boom/65-f23c0a4a-60c4-49d6-b716-5fbfb103ab57

Since they could see inside the cockpit, that would likely rule out a pressurization problem because the windows would have frosted over. The pilots who intercepted Payne Stewart's aircraft saw the windows were frosted over which made it fairly easy for the NTSB to zero in on the cause, although they never figured out with certainty if pressure was lost due to pilot error, or mechanical failure.

Another possibility is the pilot was the only person aboard. IIRC, the Cessna Citation is authorized to fly with just one pilot so he might have been ferrying the aircraft to another location to pick up the crew and passengers. If he suffered a medical emergency, that could explain it.

You younger folks didn't grow up with sonic booms as a regular occurrence in life. Just sitting in your house and all of a sudden a loud ass boom and all of your windows in the house shake.

So awesome.

Remember the first time as a kid when we heard it. We were playing football in the yard about the time Dad rolled up from work......BOOOOMMM! Felt it in your chest and the windows on the house rattled (could hear it outside the house. We all stopped, and turned to my Dad who explained it to us. Heard it off and on for a few years at different times so much it would cause us to look up and go about our day.

I had a kiddo later in life and some guys I know were all hunting with our kids in deer blinds spread out along a river bottom a few years ago. Sitting there watching deer from our blind an BOOOMMM! Instantly, the phone texts start between the dads. My son commented that in the second before the boom, all of the crows and birds that had been the main source of noise stopped, then it hit. When I responded to the other dads what I was 99.99 sure what it was, they were like "how do you know?" Response: Because I am almost 10 years older than you guys,

NTSB will get the FDR and the CVR. If it was a medical emergency the CVR might have still picked up some noise even absent a ratio transmission. The FDR will let us know about pressurization and the rest of the mechanical status.

Give it a week and Juan Brown,Blancolirio, will have a video on it.

Panic over a sonic boom is why the US never had a supersonic passenger jet like Concorde.

Most are, yes.

I read one report that said four people were thought to be on board and that it had overshot its planned destination. That would imply a normal flight with a flight plan and not theft or something nefarious. Payne Stewart situation seems the most plausible.

Strange that it would make a beeline for controlled airspace over DC though.
