It's systemic.

ETA CONTEXT: when I started this thread. The OP title was "the ugly face of white supremacy" which was clearly tongue in cheek sarcasm to show that Vandegrift High clearly didn't get the memo. But staff changed it to "High School Honor Graduates" but left my sad face emoji the same which could lead some to infer that I didn't approve of all of these Indian kids taking over the top 10% which couldn't be further from the truth. I wish all races had it together like these good folks do.

Can you imagine how indoctrinated they are at this point?
If you say you hate the state of politics in this nation and you don't get involved in it, you obviously don't hate the state of politics in this nation.

There is a bar, your kids have the option to reach that bar irregardless of extracurriculars. FYI, everyone has extracurriculars and leadership skills.

PS hardwork and patenting matters, they're out working us.

I absolutely believe this. Kids have it too easy. Having a top 3% kid who plays 3 sports, he knows that the grades matter more than the sports. Sports effect the grade, sports go away.

Sports don't matter unless you're at an elite level. You need to be having an honest conversation with them about their athletic talent and where it may land them. If you're playing three varsity sports, you aren't elite at any and neither is your school. If not join a lower level school and have at it. Athletics is probably our last real world meritocracy.

Sometimes its Ok for a kid to be a big fish in a little pond. He enjoys it and he keeps his grades at the top of his class. He nor we have any delusions of some NFL or college career in any of his sports. (If I can get two years of Jr. College paid for before a transfer to A&M, I would be Ok with it!) I understand what you are saying though.

He does have to have knee surgery next Friday though, but that is part of the process also.

What do you mean they're out working us? Who is us and what are they?

I'll be honest, that is one of the most honest and frank answers that I've seen on here in a long time. I think a lot of times we get lost in thinking our kids are special etc and they deserve this or that spot when really they aren't elite. The same goes for academics. I appreciate your response.

I mean the Indians and Asians are out working all of us. They put the score up on the refrigerator and say get there. The real test scores don't lie. There are only so many spots at the elite publics. Sorry if that offends your snowflake sensibilities.

This is nothing new. My ex-wife's high school class was the last one with an American born valedictorian or salutatorian like 40+ years ago in Amarillo of all places.

Edit - lasted until the immigrants had children graduating

Appreciate it. We learned our lesson about false expectations in the travel ball baseball circuit. We and he got fed up the with Braydlynnnnn is going to play for the Astros mindset of parents. I had always told him to never quit something that you started, but we agreed that was not our cup of tea.

Funny though, he was watching the SEC tournament with me tonight and said, "I should start playing baseball again." I looked at him sideways and he started laughing, "Yeah, that's probably not the best idea Dad!"

Amen my man. That's my problem with the big 6A schools and the limited nature of varsity sports there. Being apart of a team is good for the kids, they may not be world beaters but they play and it's fun. I'm not advocating trophies for all but it's good to compete and get to that level.

I am of an age when I make the assumption implied in this statement almost instinctively because I grew up in a very different America, but it is very possible that most or all of these high-achieving kids--congratulations to them all!--were born in the United States.

They're Americans though right? Didn't offend me nor am I a snowflake. I've been banging the drum a long time that this subset of Americans has a will a lot of the rest of us don't.

Any non-Asians that have a problem with Asians kicking their kids' asses academically? Go look into a mirror and have your kids also look in that mirror.

Asian Americans were essentially slaves building the railroads and then massively discriminated against during World War II. There were just as many restrictions against them as there were against African Americans. The difference is they never played the victim mentality broadly. Asian Americans follow the success sequence of finishing at least high school, getting a full-time job, and getting married before having children better than any other ethnic group. Because out of wedlock births rarely crosses their minds, Asians lead the country in college education, income, and marriage success rates.

This is my kid's HS. Last year the Valedictorian was a white male but it is intensely competitive. There is a kid who didn't make this list that is my neighbor who is also Asian and got into Stanford. That's why the Top 10% is a joke, the level of academic preparedness these kids have for college is insane. I would bet all of them are starting as Sophomores or Juniors in college because they have so many AP and Dual Credit hours. Average SAT score for the Top 10% is well above 1400.

Usually they have more white kids mixed in with the top group, just not in this class. Sometimes they have a Black kid or a Hispanic kid but almost always the parents are 1st Gen Immigrants from Nigeria or Central/South America with highly educated parents.

Personally I love it. My kids are very prepared for intense competition and very few kids I have talked to that graduated from there think college is nearly as hard as HS was.

These kids deserve their honors... As we conservatives, say "completion is a good thing" and I agree.
