DeSantis signs illegal immigration crackdown and rails against Biden

TALLAHASSEE Gov. Ron DeSantis railed against President Joe Biden over the influx of migrants across the nation's southern border before signing a new state law Wednesday imposing tough penalties and new restrictions on undocumented immigrants in Florida.

DeSantis, expected soon to announce his candidacy for the Republican presidential nomination, spoke in Jacksonville from a podium with a sign proclaiming, "Biden's Border Crisis."
Yeah!

Strengthening employment requirements

Employers are required to verify a new employee's employment eligibility within three business days after the first day the new employee begins working for pay.

On July 1, private employers with 25 or more employees must use the federal E-Verify system to verify a new employee's employment eligibility. Public agencies are also required to use the E-Verify system to verify a new employee's employment eligibility.

Employers cannot continue to employ an unauthorized alien after obtaining knowledge that a person is or has entered the county illegally.

It is unlawful for any person to knowingly employ, hire, recruit or refer, either for herself or himself or on behalf of another for private or public employment within the state a "foreign national" who is not authorized to work in the U.S.
Civil, not criminal enforcement. $1,000 a day fine.

The law had made transporting illegals within Florida a felony.
Ag lobby probably made that go away. Now it is a felony to drive them into Florida.

Quote:

(This was an earlier draft)
SB 1718 would amend Title XLVI of the Florida Statutes, Section 787.07, to provide criminal penalties for "persons who knowingly and willfully violate, or who reasonably should know and who violate, certain provisions relating to the transporting into or within [Florida]" of illegal immigrants. The proposed amendment would also criminalize the "concealing, harboring, or shielding from detection, or the attempt thereof," of undocumented immigrants. These actions would be considered a third-degree felony under the proposed amendment. Link

Other provisions of this law can be read online.

Realistically, it seems this law can easily be skirted through direct cash payments to day laborers.

Hundreds protest new Florida immigration law
Hundreds of immigrants and their families marched in the agricultural town of Homestead on Saturday in protest of a new law placing additional restrictions on undocumented immigration.

The law signed earlier this month by Gov. Ron DeSantis expands requirements for businesses with more than 25 staffers to use E-Verify, a federal system that determines if employees can legally work in the U.S. It prohibits local governments from providing money to organizations that issue identification cards to people illegally in the country and invalidates out-of-state driver's licenses held by undocumented immigrants.

Another provision requires hospitals that accept Medicaid to include a citizenship question on intake forms, which critics said was intended to dissuade undocumented immigrants from seeking medical care. Undocumented immigrants, who are widely represented in Florida's agricultural, construction and tourism industries, say the law is discriminatory against law-abiding workers integral for the state's economy.
