Big Gulp: New York City's Soda Ban and the Battle over Sugary Drinks
On Thursday, the New York City health department voted to prohibit the sale of sweetened beverages greater than 16 ounces -- including sodas, sports drinks and sweetened coffees and teas -- in restaurants, food carts, delis and concession stands at movie theaters, stadiums and arenas. This is but one measure in cities and towns around the country intended to reduce consumption of sodas and other sweetened drinks. Will bans and taxes work to curb problems like childhood obesity?
Just over ten years ago, limiting the size of sweet drinks and/or placing a sugar tax on them was being instituted in blue cities to supposedly help people lose weight. Now they are glorifying being overweight and making it a protected class.
Just shows you it was never about helping people, it was about controlling them and making an extra buck. Now they've decided the better strategy is to have them as another aggrieved class in their coalition so they can play the protective daddy and take their votes.
