Has anyone read the article about the TAMU Chapter of Chi Alpha and its connection to a local church and sex offender?
Here is the link:https://www.thebatt.com/news/chi-alpha-organization-took-students-to-church-with-links-to-a-sex-offender/article_793cdc2e-e876-11ed-907b-d33f4dd8cad8.html

The gist of the article is that the local chapter and church mentioned knew about a registered sex offender associated with both but kept it hidden since their inception (offender was convicted in 2012). This is the only article I have seen, so I don't know if it is just a breaking story or already discussed. A law firm representing some of the victims has asked a number of universities in Texas, including TAMU, to address it with the local chapter.

I think the gist of it is the leadership of the church in question did not believe the allegations and felt that the offender pleaded guilty, for whatever reason, even though he was being targeted by his accusers. In fact, the prosecutors in the case dismissed over 90% of the charges and allowed time served to come out to (what I believe to be) a 3 month sentence (and life registry) in a roughly 20 year old non-contact sexual abuse case.

You'll have to make your own call as to whether what the church and fraternity did there was reasonable -- i.e. letting this guy stay around -- but what the Batt and others seem to be saying is that this is a strict liability/zero tolerance issue and there is no room for arguments to the contrary. Again, decide for yourself.

I'm bothered by any idea that a crime is so bad that being innocent of it is no defense (ala Trump) but at the same time, sex abuse is a serious offense that has to be taken very seriously.

Nope, unlike Dems who refuse to condemn trans movement, Republicans will heartily condemn pedos and sex offenders like the guy in the article.

In fact, we still believe in jail time for criminals!

You think you're being cute, but you're not.

Religious people get arrested and convicted.

The party you support not only get away with it, but wants to legalize much of it.
"If you will not fight for right when you can easily win without blood shed; if you will not fight when your victory is sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival. There may even be a worse case. You may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves." - Sir Winston Churchill

This isn't hard. Anyone ever convicted or even creditably accused has to sit out from church leadership. That simple. We don't have to weigh in on the man's eternal soul, but we can say we will not give you any sort of official capacity in which you can have direct access to children.

Nothing good happens from "sleepovers" with church staff, or teachers, or coaches, or police, or community organizers…

Also agreed. Thankfully more and more parents are waking up to this.

If anyone causes one of these little ones, those who believe in me, to stumble, it would be better for them to have a large millstone hung around their neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea. Matthew 18:6
