Context: Principal is fired from charter school for allowing Michelangelo's David to be shown to 6th graders as part of a class on Renaissance art. Also for context, I saw all manner or Renaissance nudes in art class in 5th grade… in Catholic school. It never struck anyone as sexual in the least outside of your typical immature boys giggling and joking (guilty) over boobies. So I find the parents involved in this particularly moronic, assuming that this is all there is to the story.

Geez... When I was in 6th grade Renaissance art and the JC Penny catalog were as real as it got.

Two thoughts.

First, she should have forced them to fire her rather than resigning. That wold make her more of a martyr and I think a better story when looking for a new job. Resigning is a bit of an admission she did something wrong.

Second, this was a "classical school" charter school. I think the "classical" schools push things like Latin class and no computers, a throw-back to the 1950s or 60s. That may be skewing the over-reaction by the parents. This would not have been an issue at a normal public school.

this is a logical consequence of the "save the children" moral panic that's been brewing the last handful of years. is anyone really surprised nude renaissance art is getting caught in the crossfire of parents trying to completely sanitize their children's educations of any and all depictions of sensuality?

I went to Catholic school and was shown plenty of art there. Christian schools traditionally have been the institutions upholding education in art that historically originated in and was commissioned by the church. Much of which contained elements of nudity. Feeling that Christianity precludes exposure to classical depictions of the human form is conservative idiocracy and makes us no better than the Marxist liberal snowflake thought police.

Might as well start censoring all math problems that result in the number 69. It makes that much sense.

Anecdotal stories that I can pass along from my lifetime....

When I as young in Beaumont one of the downtown theaters had Renaissance replica statues as artwork within the theater. After the property was bought by a church group they had them destroyed as being pornagraphic.

During my work career in the oil business had an opportunity to work in Italy and one of our business partners form there related the story of his cousin who was a young priest assigned to the Vatican Museum. Evedently one of the previous Popes decided that Renaissance art was pornographic as well and had appendages lopped off and fig leaves installed. They did not throw away the offending parts, but put them in boxes and stored them. Revisionist history took over. His job was to reconnect the pieces. Needless to say he was quizzed about how his effort was progressing at family gatherings.

Shouldn't private schools have freedom to be run how they see fit?

Sounds like some Karen's got their henhouse together, got their cycle's synched, and threw a massive hissy. Also guarantee you some of them had an axe to grind with the principal. Probably well connected to the school board too.

Don't look too long though as a lot of it really is…pretty close. The Sistine chapel was highly controversial even, in its day.

As to certain statues (including David), some of this nudity is very related to an appropriation of a pagan tradition for deities' statues, and a growing interest in humanism.

I had this same thought. Liberal misdirection to dilute the rights arguments against drag queens.

I wouldn't call Rennaisance art "pornographic". However, it certainly is not modest. We are trying to teach all three of our children to be modest (boys and girls). We went to the replica of the Parthenon in Nashville and they laughed and giggled like crazy. Of course, they were in 2nd and 3rd grade at the time.

I do understand people of varying religious views not wanting to have nude art and statues displayed where their kids can see them. They probably should have been informed by the school, in advance of the lesson on Rennaisance art, and given the opportunity to opt their kids out of that lesson.

I once went to a children's art museum.

Everything was displayed using refrigerator magnets.
