(Reuters) -Hundreds of Google employees staged a walkout on Wednesday at the company's office in Zurich, Switzerland, after more than 200 workers were laid off.

In January, Google's parent company Alphabet announced plans to cut 12,000 jobs around the world, equivalent to 6% of its global workforce.

The decision came amid a wave of job cuts across corporate America, particularly in tech, where companies have shed more than 290,000 workers since the start of the year, according to tracking site Layoffs.fyi.

Workers at Google's Zurich office, home to around 5,000 employees, had staged a walkout last month, protesting against then impending layoffs.

When there is a threat you might get cut, something tells me that if you want to keep your job leaving is not the correct reaction.

The French and Italians are spoiling the Swiss. Now the Swiss expect a job for life no matter what....

We had some minor layoffs (5%?), and all the young people were up in arms.

"We have money in the bank! Why did we have to lay people off? What are we doing to make sure they get jobs?... grumble grumble grumble."

Mostly a bunch of SJW/DEI leftists who have no idea how the real world works.

Attitudes like these would be unconscionable in my grandfather's time. He worked three jobs and my grandmother worked two just to put my dad and two uncles through private Catholic school in the 1950's and 1960's. That was their legacy: hard work and doing whatever it took to survive to make their kids' lives better than their own.

When I was young I watched this cartoon. It was made in the 40's but we would do well as a society to encourage morals and messages like this to be made for our kids today. Instead we tell them that they're perfect and that they can be anything they want to be.

I remember watching that cartoon as a kid. Also I remember this line from a popular song in the 60's from some obscure British band.

If Google kept running while the 200 protested, I guess they proved they're non-essential workers and can be made redundant also.

This might be a great way to identify people you don't want on payroll, say you're laying off imaginary people and then see who protests.

Wife and I have both been working 10 years and between us, our companies have had 9 layoffs. Out of those 9, we've each only been laid off once, so we perform well enough to usually make the cut but sometimes it's out of your control. Mature businesses seem to have layoffs every 2-5 years, and it seems like there is rarely just one round of layoffs, there is usually more a few months following the first round of layoffs. Covid also didn't help recently.

It's just a part of modern private sector in America.

The time I was laid off was also a small start up that was running out of money and needed to lower the burn rate (they laid off like 1/2 of the employees, I got cut in round 2 which was 6 weeks after the first round). That's a risk I knew about when I took the job, but I was confident in my ability to find more work if that happened, and I had another job offer within a month.

The time my wife was laid off she was already out looking and interviewing for a new job. She was laid off on Monday and by that Friday had two job offers and accepted one.

Now I know people don't typically find new work that fast if whole industries are in a downturn. But layoffs are something everyone needs to be prepared for, and young people joining the workforce should be aware of. But many are sheltered. Working class kids whose parents have been through it know the reality.
