Xi's Trojan President is in office now.

The Chinese snuck into the White House inside Biden's empty, corrupt skull.

This is likely in response to the US Navy's exercises in the South China Sea.

China always gets pissy when we do stuff there because in their mind, the entire SCS belongs to them.
"If you will not fight for right when you can easily win without blood shed; if you will not fight when your victory is sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival. There may even be a worse case. You may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves." - Sir Winston Churchill

Bull****

Ukraine, 2014? Georgia (country, not state), etc under Obama.

W had terrorist attacks, as did Clinton.

I'm no Trump supporter, but the media's schtick that he was "crazy" and such definitely made other heads of state a lot less likely to FAFO. Under Biden? LOL.

Honest question- with the multi-year obvious escalation to this point, how much Taiwanese manufacturing have we been able to move out of the country so we are not dependent on what China does there?

Similar question: it's been 3 years since China unleashed a biological weapon on the globe (regardless of intent) - how much dependence on them for things like Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient have we been able to move away from China?

I fear the answer is "we've done nothing". It's like being at war with someone and somehow only one side realizes it.

In the end, I don't care about most of the cheap plastic crap you can buy off Amazon, because my life won't dramatically change without it. But I very much care about microchips, drugs, vitamin C, and steel.

WW3 has already started.

We're just in the "hitler has invaded Czechoslovakia but the US/France/UK aren't involved yet" phase

Agree with this.

I could live with a false peace for now if I believed we were using it to ready for the fight. It feels like we're doing the opposite.

It took Hitler over a year and exhausting his military to take Czechoslovakia?

I remember when they were posting pictures of Ukrainians at the beach shortly before the invasion. Putin looked into PeePaw's dead eyes before he moved and Xi has also recently. Color me skeptical about posturing.

Lol, no.

But Russia wont' give up. They'll double down.

Xi will go for Taiwan b/c Biden is weak.

Game on.

Look - I'll be the first to admit that today's China and today's Russia have some major reasons to doubt their competence in war fighting.

Decades of bad economics have left Russia's hardware incredibly deficient, and the majority of their standing military is conscripted and unmotivated. They have performed terribly in the Ukraine.

And as for China, the vast majority of their military is WAY below a level of training that poses a real threat, and their logistics are their Achilles heel. They cannot move the majority of their troops or assets anywhere they might need them.

That being said - I don't like risking underestimating my opponents, especially nuclear armed ones that might get desperate when their ass starts getting kicked. If we can be more aggressive to cripple them economically and avoid the hot war, I feel like that's something we should be doing.

Also, there are plenty of recent red flags for our own military readiness. We might spend the first 6 months of a conflict debating where on our uniforms is the optimal placement of a rainbow flag.

Yep. Drawing down our "strategic reserve" to influence mid-term elections, focusing on pronouns and promoting on DEI instead of merit. We're not preparing for any fight.

I am sure some folks in the private sector have done some things. Our government? Biden supports this and has China's interests at heart, so he has done nothing. Pete Buttigieg? He's learned how to breastfeed and spent a lot of needless time on leave while America's supply chain has struggled.

What is it that Taiwan has that the world needs so bad??? Is it micro chip manufacturing? Fine, blow it all up and chyna will not want it anymore. Take your ball and go home. We need to slow down this AI crap anyways. Without microchips, it will be hard to move forward. Oh no!!! our vehicles won't have fancy gadgets anymore. Oh no, our phones will have to be pay phones. Who cares.

The Western semiconductor industry is building and investing at record pace to get the heck out of China and to create contingencies for what is in Taiwan. What does that mean? It means that in 6-8 years our reliance on China/Taiwan for manufacturing will be greatly reduced. And that perhaps a decade or so from now the global semiconductor market can be nearly whole without China.

Until then, hold onto your butts.

Extremely interesting dynamic at play - US tech largely behind what TSMC can do to my knowledge. Even with investments I think catching up on sizing is longer off. Although, even TSMC is hedging their bets, building $40 billion fab in Arizona.

There might be others but TSMC is the prize IMO, and they are making moves to de-risk the scenario, at least as far as global supply is concerned.
