Then you haven't been paying attention. It happens several times a year.CardiffGiant said:
Don't remember ever hearing about us launching ICBM tests. You also don't think the timing of this test is "suspicious"?

There is a turning basin at Cape Canaveral called the "Trident Turning Basin". Why would the Air Force (Now Space Force) need submarines? They don't. But the Navy needs access to the Space Force's tracking radars to verify the performance of our ICBMs when they test them and used to park subs at that location:CardiffGiant said:

Yeah - probably a good opportunity for a staff title correction. An unarmed ICBM is VERY different from a nuclear test.CanyonAg77 said:
Terrible thread title. There was no no one involved. Just the missile

Atmospheric, underwater, and outer space nuclear tests were banned under the Limited Test Ban Treaty. Underground testing is still permitted. The Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty was rejected by nearly the entire Senate so if we wanted to, we could conduct underground tests. The only thing preventing us from doing so is the moratorium put in place by Bush 41 remains in force. Bush 43 actually had us prepared to resume testing since we were looking at some new warheads for our ICBMs, but Obama canceled all of that.CanyonAg77 said:Get Off My Lawn said:Yeah - probably a good opportunity for a staff title correction. Yep, nuclear tests were banned decades ago. The treaty was with the Soviets, but we still honor it.
That doesn't mean we don't test components, such as dropping test bombs without explosive or nuclear warheads on board. It's a way to test fuzing and circuitry
As a former ICBM officer, I can vouch for this comment.Geddy Lee soul patch said:
This is done on a regular basis to test readiness, from Vandenburg...not from one of our ICBM silos in the northern plains.
Edit: Also it's a test of the missile, not a nuke test. There's no nuclear warhead onboard.
