How long do you want to ignore this user?
All I keep seeing is people who got laid off saying how awful it is that they were notified by an email and not a personal conversation.

I literally don't understand how you can layoff 12,000 people by having one on one conversations with each person, what else can you do?

I worked in auto industry.

Best one I saw was cancelling people's badge access at lunch time. Then posting a note about it on the door.

Lmao.

Keeps the pressure off the supervisors who usually didn't make the decision anyways, and greatly reduces the odds of a workplace incident. It's impersonal but some people don't deal with it maturely and it is difficult to predict who that might be.

All those little ****s kept arguing they can do everything remotely and never need to go back into the office, so they got laid off remotely. **** em.

In an era where we lack accountability, at a company with no spine or leadership, I guess we can't expect HR or managers to do the right thing and talk to some one?

I think that's what some of these did. They showed up and were granted access or not...

It does seem a little cold, but at the same time all I would really care about is the severance package, and Google is being pretty damn generous. The manner of notification is really just about feels at the end of the day.

Makes a lot of sense in this instance. When you're getting rid of 12,000 people whose initial reaction to the fact that the coffee shop is out of soy milk is, "I, LIKE, JUST CAN'T EVEN!" or someone stating a non-leftist political view is, "REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!" a simple termination email coupled with immediate cancellation of all credentials is probably the safest play.

I've had to terminate people, face-to-face in the presence of HR, and it was always a miserable experience.

People would cry, beg forgiveness, and then turn angry and threaten you.

Yes, all stages of grief in the span of like 5 minutes. It is a crazy thing to witness.

Again, how is HR supposed to make 12,000 personal calls? That's not realistic, it would take months

Google handled this appropriately. CEO sent a clear cut email to the entire organization providing context for all of it. Severance packages were lucrative and transparent. Communication was quick and orderly. Having been through a bunch of these in O&G over the years and being cut through one of them, it's always better to just rip the band-aid off and get on with it. In the end it's better for those leaving and staying to skip the emotions and make it transactional.

Better to get an email than show up for work one day and your badge doesn't work anymore.

I've been laid off due to an industry collapse and people reacted differently. Mine was mostly on the lines of: "well, that's a bummer, I liked that job. At least I'm free to do something else now. Take a couple of days to relax and get my affairs in order, then start the full time job of looking for my next job." Did just that. It was a bit of a shock but the feeling of freedom from any further obligations to an employer was nice, too.

I got called by HR at home 3 hours before I was supposed to fly overseas.

I've part of many layoffs. Managers and HR partners pick up the phone and start calling people till it's done.

The story I read was that people are going to be laid off in October and then getting pretty big severance packages after that point. I'm not sure how anyone is complaining about any of it, really... (assuming what I read was true)

This. Unfortunately been a part of too many RIFs in remote orgs. Manager calls with or without HR support. That's a fair expectation. Being RIFd via email is chicken ****

Why would anyone want to have a conversation at that point? I work for a small company and if we had to do layoffs we'd definitely have conversations with people but if I was one of 12K I don't understand the desire to talk to anyone. Decision has been made, take the severance and move on with your day.

I have been part of two layoffs and yes I was told by my manager and an HR rep, but they were no where near this big of a layoff.

Pretty much this.

They're giving people 4+ months of pay. I would rather have that and an email than 2 weeks and someone sitting down with me to say, "Hey, look. You're gone."

Because we're still people and not just numbers. RIFs suck, but managers should put on their big boy pants and have a professional conversation explaining what's happening and next steps

Heard some video game industry stories where they gather wveryone for a company wide meeting and send some folks to smaller conference rooms, to get their termination papers.

Buddy of mine in O&G just had a security guard with a bankers box hanging out by his desk.

Seems like an email would be easier.
