They won't have to go to neighboring states to gamble and lots of service industry jobs will be created. Plus it's a tourism attraction.

Not saying it outweighs the cons, but there are definitely benefits to legal casinos.

Legal casino resorts and entertainment in Texas could absolutely BURY Louisiana.

Think of all the money going to OK and LA courtesy of Texans

The state will benefit financially. Gambling is so commonplace now, OP, it's pointless to exclude ourselves from the revenue stream. Finally and most importantly, it's pro-liberty.

Too much Texas money going to the Indians and Louisiana. Keep it here.

But I'd like to see economic impact Lake Charles has received from their 2 casino resorts.

Why do the moral high ground crowd get to decide for the rest of us? Limiting gambling is the opposite of liberty and self determination.

You know what benefits? Freedom.

As it grows more commonplace the tourism aspect dwindles to zero.

Next up, what economic benefit has the state seen from the lottery? Elimination of school taxes and best schools in the nation?

Hondo.

Should at least have them within 10 miles of amy state or Indian reservation that allows them. Why should Texas miss out on all that money headed to OK and LA

You should have to get at least a B in statistics before you are allowed to gamble. At that point you can't claim you didn't know that you were almost certainly headed for a net loss.

Revenue raised from these new sites could provide funding for public education and public higher education, for the arts as well as for public safety and law enforcement."

I dont care if it happens either way...but they said the EXACT same thing about the lottery.

It wont lower property taxes.

They're just using that verbiage to get it passed. 'do it for the kids' and all...

Some of you are absolutely terrified of freedom and losing your ability to keep others from doing things you don't like.

I do wish, if this is going to be passed, that they'd push to have it outside the major cities, rather than in them, to help reduce the negative effects of casinos. It would also help 'spread the wealth' around the State and create some additional destination sites.

For example, it'd be cool if they restored places like the Baker Hotel, and turned it into a casino (Mineral Wells).

It will definitely bring more dollars to the state. Whether or not that gets spent on kids or cops, frankly, I don't care. My main argument is that gambling is commonplace and it's absurd that I can't wager on Fanduel or other sites because of antiquated TX laws. Anyone who has a problem with my wagering on moral grounds can suck it. You need a better argument if you want to restrict my liberty.

Let me see if I understand this: There are a lot of stupid Texans who like to throw their money away in casinos. so we should make it more convenient for them, and the state should take a slice of their stupidly lost money in the process?

Not too long ago I learned that you can gamble in Texas. It's legal. You just have to pay a seat fee to sit down and do it. I guess there isn't enough demand to date for someone to open one and get enough traffic from people who are willing to pay the seat fee before being dealt some cards?

The only reason I know this is because I know a guy who is in the process of opening a casino in DFW area. I was shocked by this as I had never heard of this. I thought it was just straight illegal but it's not. Called my best friend who gambles for a living and has played in the WSOP and he confirmed it's absolutely legal via the seat fee policy.

It's just that no one does it.

I lived there for a couple of years. If it helped the economy and lowered taxes, you could have fooled me.

That's EXACTLY what I was thinking about when I typed it. Weed tourism was huge in Colorado. Now, my understanding is that it's crashing

Because 100% of everything you do and spend your money on is obviously not stupid?

Would love to see a list of the things you spend your morally superior money on.

Proba ly because nobody knows it is legal. Hell, I didnt.

And even if the "seat fee" is minimal amd not an inconvenient thing, the fact thatit exiata makes it inconvenient and people naturally will go places they perceive to be easier and less cumbersom.

Reminds me of the "private club" memberships my hometown used to make restaurants and bars have so people could have a drink before enough people finally got tired of the stupid laws and voted to change them.

Yeah, I get all that. I had no idea about this either until I talked to the guy about it. I even has his business plan which he wanted me to review. I scoffed at him at first.

I guess my only point is, while inconvenient, gambling is legal here. Im just surprised no one has yet to open a casino and at least try to make a go at it.

So many people I know gamble in texas but send their money elsewhere to do it.

We need an alterative revenue stream instead of all property tax. Edibles and Casinos would be a great way to decrease property tax but increase state tax revenue.

Why would anyone be against a tax that you can decide NOT to buy or do?

Because they know better than you about what's best for you.
