The accuser was 17 at the time but was apparently caught on video multiple times telling various people that she was 18 and had already been with 20+ guys (you can find one video on youtube with a little bit of searching). Not sure what the law says about a 17 year old lying about being 18.

17 is the legal age of consent in most states. sadly, to your question, in most states you only have to have intended to do the act without knowing that youre committing a crime. You could meet her in a 21+ bar, she could tell you she's 21, show you her ID that proves she's 21, call her mom and have her tell you she's 21, but the fact that shes under the age of consent means you're boned if a prosecutor wants to prosecute you.

Love how individual teams, and the NFL as a whole, get tough and sanctimonious with some no-name punter but look the other way when its some franchise super star player that gets in trouble. One look no farther than Cleveland and Watson to see this in action.
