I'm not an expert on calculating CO2 emissions from burning fuel, but how do you get 2 tons of CO2 out of 1/2 ton of jet fuel?

When the fuel burns its reacting with oxygen so for the CO2 emissions you get the weight of the carbon plus the weight of the oxygen. And CO2 by weight is over 2/3 oxygen.

So by your calculations, the enviro nazis like to round up!

Now calculate it for the millions or gasoline and diesel used daily ..

Thus water is wet .. CO2 has been around for years

Only problem is Jet fuel isn't all carbon.

Granted, with hydrogen carbon chains, the hydrogen is considerably lighter than the carbon, but it's more of the total number of atoms.

Need some molar calcs by a chemistry person. O2 is much heavier than hydrogen.

Jet fuel is a mixture of hydrocarbons. To make things simpler I'll use propane as an example.

Let's say you have a 20lb propane tank and you burn it all. The balanced reaction is:

C3H8 + (5)O2 ---> (3)CO2 + (4)H2O

Propane has a molecular weight of 44 so in 20 lbs there are .45 lbmols. For every lbmol of propane that reacts we get 3 lbmols of CO2. So our .45 lbmols of propane yields 1.35 lbmols of CO2. CO2 also has a molecular weight of 44 so our 1.35 lbmols of CO2 has a mass of 59.4 lbs.

20lbs of propane yields 60 lbs of CO2 when it burns. The extra mass comes from the oxygen. The same thing happens with jet fuel.

I'm just trying to figure out the rough math of how a half ton mass of hydrocarbons becomes 2 tons of CO2 (with a little CO and also some Pure carbon soot no matter how efficient the combustion is) with a Little less than 2:1 ratio oxygen to available Carbon minus the mass of the hydrogen which mostly became water. 1:4 seems a little high even with the higher atomic mass of Oxygen.
Hydrogen is ~1, carbon ~12, Oxygen ~16

So, let's disregard hydrogen in this estimate. For every 1 carbon atom mass 12, you end up with mass 12+16+16 roughly as it is mostly CO2

12:44, 3:11. That's not too far off of 1:4, I suppose. 2 tons is a pretty big round up.

That's close mouth. Are there other minor components in JP-4 and JP-7? Interesting stuff.

Maybe instead of assuming some random Twitter post is legitimate and trying to disprove him by doing chemistry, we should all just assume it's a random Twitter post and assume it's crap anyway.

While the calculations above may be accurate, they neglect to consider that if that jet happened to be at a meeting with Garrett Riley, it reduces the CO2 impact by a multiple of 10.

And 02 is air for mammals

To sum it up...

Let us assume jet fuel is pure tetramethylpentane (C8H18). 1 mole C8H18 will produce 8 moles of Carbon, or combined with O2 that would be 8 moles of CO2.

0.5 moles of C8H18 will produce 4 moles of CO2 : The ratio remains the same 1:8 for any metric.

Water and co2….we are making plant food!! What a glorious event…we need more of this combustion thing…is the technology marketable or do we need to lobby (political kickbacks) for government subsidies (steal tax money to indirectly fund political subsidies and destroy the economy by disrupting the natural capitalist market)
