Despite the crucial role of physical appearance in forming first impressions, little research has examined the accuracy of personality impressions based on appearance alone. This study examined the accuracy of observers' impressions on 10 personality traits based on full-body photographs using criterion measures based on self and peer reports. When targets' posture and expression were constrained (standardized condition), observers' judgments were accurate for extraversion, self-esteem, and religiosity. When targets were photographed with a spontaneous pose and facial expression (spontaneous condition), observers' judgments were accurate for almost all of the traits examined. Lens model analyses demonstrated that both static cues (e.g., clothing style) and dynamic cues (e.g., facial expression, posture) offered valuable personality-relevant information. These results suggest that personality is manifested through both static and expressive channels of appearance, and observers use this information to form accurate judgments for a variety of traits.

What are the implications of appearance based judgements turning out to be accurate?

Does this suggest that some subconscious biases are not unfounded subconscious beliefs but instead are more likely to be objective and accurate evaluations?

And for those wondering, this study is out of UC Berkeley.

Jordan Peterson has claimed many times you can see a "hardening" of a person's face after certain life events.

I don't think he is wrong on that.

And I do think the choices in a person's life often show up in their face and mannerisms. So without hearing any words you already can know something about the person.

They are laying the groundwork to be able to punish you based on your appearance. Buckle up.
You may not be a moron, but some people think you are.

I can walk through the Heights H-E-B and effortlessly spot out miserable liberals with damn near 100% accuracy. We are like oil and water. I hope they feel the same about me. I don't want to ever interact with a single one. They are just rotten to the core.

Elections are when people find out what politicians stand for, and politicians find out what people will fall for.

people act as if subconscious bias is always a bad thing ,it is not. in fact from an evolutionary perspective it is a survival trait.

We've known this ever since Kennedy beat Nixon in the first presidential election where tv mattered more than radio.

But thanks for the 62 year old update whoever decided to commission this study.

Most of us understand this. Some people try to deny it has a useful evolutionary purpose that aids self preservation and mate selection for reproduction. You have no fundamental choice but to rely on this instinct in certain social situations when encountering unknown persons. With almost no data, you still are forced to evaluate risk and trustworthiness.

Sure you need some liberals in the population that are more open to risk to facilitate social and economic exchange amongst groups but too much liberalism results in an excessive individual and/or collective risk.

Some progressive leftist academics and political activists are angry that this fundamental to our nature and demand we all engage in reckless self delusion to that effect.
