Despite the recent run of racial hoaxes at sporting events, this appears to be an actual example of racism at a Texas high school (assuming the audio is real). A black player from an opposing high school was apparently subjected to monkey noises while shooting free throws and throughout the game. This is akin to idiot Italian soccer fans throwing bananas and I hope the students who made these noises are found and punished.

That is awful and the people who act so horribly should be ashamed. That said, we give way to much power to others when we let them injure us with words. Whether a words hurt or not is up to recipient, not the giver. We used to teach "sticks and stones" and now we teach "microagressions and safe spaces".

I do not care about isolated incidents, especially when the vast majority of them turn out to be hoaxes. If this is 100% legit, and you let this bother you, instead of looking down on the idiot showcasing his ignorance, then you are WEAK. I'll never forget our mostly white HS basketball team jogging in for warmups at an all black HS in Houston in the 90's...was some of the most openly racist stuff I have ever heard...and crowds, not individuals. The level of anger was actually pretty intimidating. But I just remember thinking "I can't wait to go back home, away from these trashy people".

That being said...if this is what happened, the kid certainly should be punished. That doesn't mean this should be national f-ing news or that it confirms anything about society.

When I was in HS, many decades ago, my school (Lake Highlands in Dallas) was playing South Oak Cliff in basketball. South Oak Cliff being the most prominent HS in Dallas that was predominantly black.

Towards the end of the game they started chanting, "Crackers can't ball.... Crackers can't ball"

We responded with a chant "Watermelon, black eyed peas, Cadillac cars, we not as dumb as you think we be."

Needless to say, pandemonium ensued and there was a pretty healthy brawl.

Both schools acted appropriately and crushed the souls of those determined to be the instigators on both sides. There were a handful of suspensions and extra curricular activities were suspended for many. And that was the extent of the punishment, Which was, in my view, a reasonable degree of punishment.

No ones was labeled a monster, No one was vilified by the general public. And the press didn't go ape **** with blown out of proportion stories about the incident. Unlike today where this person in question will be ruined and vilified for the rest of their lives and if they were looking at scholarships, athletic or academic, those are long gone. This person needs to have their ass handed to them but what they are about to experience is going to by way over the top. Good luck, should have kept your mouth shut.

Does it? Every time in my life I've made monkey noises to try to amuse my kids, it sure sounded exactly like that.

Nothing to see. Heckling gone bad. Grow some skin and think better of yourself. No different than a white kid getting called cracker at a sporting event. If it's wrong then it's wrong on both sides. We just let it go. Actually didn't have a choice because we probably would have been killed .

Not sure why you'd assume it's even whites hurling the epithets. It happens, but in my experience the vast majority of legitimately awful **** is coming from a drunk mexican guy.

You're going to hear a lot more of this from zoomers because that cohort is "minority" majority and they're not one homogenous blob. The various ethnicities all have an in-group bias like any other but haven't had the moral brainwashing whites have been subjected to; they're far less afraid to throw racist jokes around. Arabs or hispanics (or whoever else) aren't any less likely to harbor some choice sentiments towards people of other races than whites are, but they've been told their whole lives that only whites can be racist. They've essentially been told they're exempt

Did they do this whenever anyone on the opposing team was shooting free throws?

Monkey noises by themself are not inherently racist. Really depends on the context.

My kids call their friends and each other monkey. It's not race related. I tell them they can't do that in this current environment… they're going to call the wrong person monkey and then all hells going to break loose.

I'm curious if they did this to everyone or just the black player(s).
