Rep. Alex Mooney, R, W.Va., announced Tuesday that he will run for Senate in 2024 in a bid to unseat Sen. Joe Manchin.

"West Virginia values are at risk in this country. We're bankrupting America. I want to be a part of the solution there," Mooney said in a radio interview on MetroNews Talkline on Tuesday morning.

"It's been talked about a lot, but I'm going to announce. I'm announcing it right now that I'm running for the U.S. Senate," Mooney said. "I'm all in."

Manchin faced his toughest challenge in 2018 when he won by only three percent, and could face a tight challenge from Mooney as West Virginia grows increasingly Republican. The moderate Democrat has faced criticism within his party as a swing vote in the 50-50 Senate during the last two years.

Mooney became the first Hispanic congressman to represent West Virginia when he assumed office in 2015. Previously, he worked as a chair of the Maryland Republican Party, where he represented a western district.

Manchin drew national attention when he announced his opposition to Biden's Build Back Better plan, which needed his vote to pass in the Senate. He continued negotiations with the White House as the bill evolved into the Inflation Reduction Act, which passed thanks to his vote.

West Virginia Gov. Jim Justice, who switched his party from Democrat to Republican, said in September that it is "possible" he might for Senate in 2024. Manchin has yet to officially declare he will run for reelection.

This is concerning. If Joe Manchin decides to run again he likely swings to the right to get re-elected, but if he decides not to run again he may succumb to the pressure and go all in with the Democrats and forever change the makeup of the Senate and Judiciary.

WV borders PA.

Don't think for a second that the voter fraud machine that is tuned to a well-oiled perfection in PA won't be shared to their (D)im Comrades across the border in WV.

Except Rs control WV unlike in PA. Easier to keep an eye on shenanigans and make changes before 24

If they try that in West Virginia their canvassers will wind up in the bottom of a mine.

Uh, maybe that's why we needed to win the House of Representatives?

That single vote house seat in New Hampshire could be important.

I'm all for WV sending a better Senator, but I get sick of the convolution folks have between Fed and State politics.

Folks running for local offices proudly proclaim where they stand on Federal issues that they'll be powerless to act on, and folks running for federal offices proudly proclaim what they'll do for the constituents (rather than the state).

A senate pitch should sound like: "send me to DC so that our state gets things we'll benefit from and otherwise get left alone to govern ourselves."

That was NH state house, not the US House.

Republicans will take the senate in 2024, question is by how many.

Montana Lock

West Virginia Lock

Ohio possible lock

Have a shot: Nevada (with Republican Gov. could change voting methods), Wisconsin, Arizona, Virginia(possible, maybe long shot) , Michigan (possible, maybe long shot), Pennsylvania (see Michigan), NM, SAME

switching parties is just a visual FU.

I'd rather him stay a democrat and show that there are democrats that are not lunatics. Just vote with the GOP every time, but keep the D next to your name. Then he can caucus with the D's and pull more votes.

Joe Manchin won't win either primary in 2024

He's toast, and I doubt he even runs

If it flips the senate, it's not just visual. That would mean Rs get to determine committee assignments and the Rs control the legislation getting to the floor.

I doubt it. He's been hosed too many times by the Dems and he seems to honestly have nothing on common with the woke left running the party. If he's a lame duck, he might just tell them to **** off.

Which means they could promptly grant Manchin the pipeline the Democrats betrayed him on right? Do it.

I don't think Manchin is going to run again.

My political wet dream is Walker winning GA and Manchin giving the Dems a middle finger to caucus with GOP. The meltdown around losing the majority would be hilarious.

It won't happen. But can you imagine?

Mooney is a Generic R, nothing more and nothing less. I can't understand how Manchin keeps winning races in this state; it seems like anything with an (R) by its name should win easily, yet no.

Jim Justice getting in the race would be bigger news.

He barely won last time. He was a popular Governer and in WV just started going deep red. They were pretty blue in 80's with all of Union members in the state.

here's a hint my Ag buddy.

with Trump at the top of the ticket the last three national elections...

NOTHING IS A GOP LOCK.

if there was EVER a lock it would be the out of party gaining massive seats with a dementia riddled unpopular leftist President in power.

NY Times reporting today that Trump cost an average of 5% in each race.

I don't think its that far fetched. Biden's latest coal/oil comments should be enough for Manchin to leave the dem party.
