I remember believing racism was put to rest forever.
And yet, America was "racist" and "oppressive."
America as a whole isn't racist or repressive by any means. That being said, it's not a stretch to say that there are Americans who are racist and act oppressive toward minorities through acts of violence, intimidation, or their choice of words.
Tiger Woods is a great example. I remember when Tiger won his first Masters in Augusta one of the golfers said something about fried chicken and collard greens that were seen as racist at the time. the same golfer said something similar to another black golfer a few days later. Does that mean every white golfer is racist, of course not, but to say there are no racists in golf because Tiger beat them all is not true.
George Allen, the former senator from Virginia, used the word "Macaca" in reference to an Indian American that was covering his campaign stop. He said, "This fellow here over here with the yellow shirt, Macaca, or whatever his name is. He's with my opponent.... Let's give a welcome to Macaca, here. Welcome to America and the real world of Virginia." The Indian American he was talking about was born in Fairfax, Virginia.
Does that mean every republican politician is a racist or speaks in racist dog whistles? Of course not, but to say racists in the true meaning of the definition don't exist, again, is not true.
There are in fact two things, science and opinion; the former begets knowledge, the later ignorance. Hippocrates
