That said, they didn't all use it in the same way. For example, President Reagan's use of the term was not used with the intention of stirring up a nationalist revolution.

Because it's not true. Donald Trump is an icon that causes many people to be unable to debate policy and instead launch into screeds about his personal conduct and how it offends them. There is nothing radical about his policies. Hispolicies brought prosperity and security to the US. There was nothing radical about that.

What I'd like to see if the gop leverage Reagan, his speeches and what he believed it. The gop needs an identity outside of trump and you could even think back to newt Gingrich and the contract with America. I very simple this is what we believe in.

Because Trump was less "extreme" than a Ronald Reagan in just about every way.
DJT freaks people out not for who he is, but who he represents. Communism has historically not been able to gain a foothold in countries with a strong Middle Class who has a belief that they can be financially upwardly mobile. The wealthy do not want their wealth diluted. The filthy Useful Idiot does not want a successful Middle Class either, because muh Communism can't get traction. Yeah, I threw the map up without looking at it closely enough. I wish I had noticed the miscoloration before my post started to get replied to.
On a few other notes. What's amazing about Reagans defeat of Mondale was that even in Mondales own state Reagan came within 3,700 votes of defeating him. Reagan and Mondale both got at least 49% of the vote there. Pretty amazing performance by the best Presidential communicator in modern America, arguably the best ever.
The electoral map will likely never look like this, but it would be interesting to see how good Reagan could do in our current moment.
What concerns me about our future is that back in 1984, Reagan won New York by the same margins as the GOP wins in Texas right now.
Ironically, that fate will be determined by how well GOP can bring Latinos into their fold. A need that exists partially based on one of the worst deals Reagan made with democrats during his presidency.
