I've not really looked into it, but I can imagine there are "furries" that aren't into it for sexual reasons and are just super socially awkward people who find it more comforting to socialize with others as some anonymous caricature. I remember that story about some fired Starbucks employee that tried starting a union and would give speeches in his furry costume.

This makes me laugh. Reminds me of a scene from the HBO show Entourage.
