All of Europe affected by this high pressure ridge are acting like it has never been hot in Europe before. Therefore, more green energy and fossil fuel cuts are needed.....so they can crumble just like Germany.

UK has had an issue with their roads starting to melt at 97 degrees for a while

Good news, Nuclear and gas are green energy now.

The oil (bitumen, actually, I think) in asphalt starts leaching out of the pavement enough to cause a slippery runway.

I see it some when out cycling in TX summers. It's just an ever so thin glaze. I see it transfer to my tires. But, we also expect it here and adjust our asphalt mixes to compensate some....I'm assuming.

It happens here in the states up in colder climate places like MN. I parked my bike when it was over 90 and came back with the kickstand over 1/2 inch embedded in the asphalt.

Likely not designed for higher temperatures so when they get the unusual heatwave, everything goes to crap.
"If you will not fight for right when you can easily win without blood shed; if you will not fight when your victory is sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival. There may even be a worse case. You may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves." - Sir Winston Churchill

If there were only such a thing as concrete.

Seems like on a military base they would go with the higher end material, especially with the weight of some of the equipment.

Runways are likely older than most of us here and were originally built hastily during WWII.

Seems to me then they've had plenty of time to take care of the issue.

Of course. Of course. Since CNN hasn't told us its true it must be disinformation.

Is the implication that humans have somehow secretly created a weather machine? Is it like a giant oven and they just leave the door open?

Just got off the phone with a colleague in the UK. 40C over there today (104 deg F for your degenerates)!

That is pretty dang hot!

I used to travel to London quite a bit and NEVER recall seeing anything on temps like this.

Yeah. No. WWII runways were short and generally incapable of handling any modern aircraft. Also just like anything else they wear out

Very well. I stand corrected.

In the hot parts of the US, the asphalt that might do this was already worn or washed away so we'd never notice.
MouthBQ98
How long do you want to ignore this user?
If they spray it down, the water will wash away the exuded surface layer and the evaporative cooling is sufficient to keep the asphalt solid. A fire truck or two could get them back up.

104 sucks in Texas. 104 in England where only a small fraction of buildings and homes have AC is crazy.

I keep telling them to keep cool wet rags on their necks and wrists, then get yelled at for not sympathizing with their pain.

Asphalt is a topper for the concrete runway underneath. You can resurface asphalt by scraping it off and reapplying new asphalt. Not so much concrete. Large, heavily used runways are routinely resurfaced every ten years or so, so having an asphalt surface you can scrape off and replace is preferable to bare concrete you have to rip out and repour.

Concrete is not a "higher end material." It is a material with a different purpose and use case.
