City of Houston sues local convenience store for failing 'remediate' neighborhood crime

Quote:

"They are being sued because they supposedly, knowingly tolerate crime at this property," Neal told Hatfield. "[The area] has gotten progressively worse in terms of crime over the last few decades, but these people are committed to the community."
Let's see...
1. City is run by libs
2. City/county lets criminals go free, even for violent crime
3. When cops arrest someone, they are immediately let out

These dildoes won't let COPS clean up crime, but somehow businesses are supposed to do it? This is stupid even for the clown show that's Houston's leadership.

This is okay in a solidly blue state, but a disgrace to tolerated in Texas. Houstonian should gather in the old torches and rotten fruit manner and run their city hall out of town.

Apply a version of Castle Doctrine to store employees, smash and grab solved overnight. Or if not overnight, after a few weeks.

Edit: BLM looting. You won't even need police anymore for that, just coroners.

Well, when you let violent criminals go on PR bonds and prosecute people for defending themselves against said violent criminals, what do you expect?

When you vote for people like Dora, this is what you deserve.

The business owner is likely scared to do anything as that area is also likely controlled by gangs. He knows if he does anything, then he's dead. Would not surprise me if he also has to pay a "protection fee."

Theres probably more to this story. Im not sure what local laws are in Houston but in LA the LAPD can put an injunction on stores or properties with significant and repeated criminal activity to install cameras and flood lights as a condition of continuing operations. I doubt its as simple as Houston wanting the store owner to make repeated citizens arrests.

I'm sure that is what this is about. City probably doesn't like the set-up for some strange reason.

No more to the story than this:
1. Libs run Houston
2. Lib policy inherently results in out of control crime
3. Libs blaming businesses for no doing the job the libs are paid to do

Libs **** up everything. Pretty straight forward.

I can't even imagine the pretzel twisting logic the city has come up with to make a business look like the bad guy here.

Good sue that store out of business then the politicians can claim the owners were racists and closed their business to hurt the neighborhood. The fact that there is no longer any businesses left in the neighborhood is just a coincidence.

So the govt forces the business to spend their own money on these items or else they can't operate? That's some commie dictator sh** so not surprising it happens in Cali.

Redistrict the city so that City Hall no longer governs their part of it. In other words, secede in the municipal sense and form a new town.

I think were torturing the definition of communist dictatorship if we include injunctions on high crime properties. The police budget isnt free and you cant operate, for instance, an apartment complex that knowlingly rents to gangbangers and drug dealers with frequent arrests on the property and expect the cops to require nothing from you.

Agreed on the communist thing, but if a guy is selling drugs on your property, you report him, a miracle happens where the cops actually show up in time to arrest him, and then the next day he is back out threatening you for stepping on his spot, what the hell is the government requiring you to pay to put up flood lights doing for you?

The system is broken. We are punishing the law abiding citizens to give victimhood status to criminals.

Here's a fun one that apparently just passed here... some classes of businesses are required to pay out of pocked to have surveillance cameras watching the outside of their business that HPD and CoH can access whenever they want. Talk about big brother.... I'm surprised I didn't get hit with that one.

You can evict for violations of law and most landlords do. A more common scenario, sadly, is for landlords to look the other way because whatever else they do, drug dealers and gang bangers usually pay rent on time and in full on the 1st of the month.

Totally. From the article, it does look like they have been reporting to the police. Granted, it is from the store's lawyer.

Quote:

Neal claims the owner of The Lucky Evening Store has installed surveillance cameras, burglar-proof window bars and signage around the shop warning loiterers against gathering near the building. He says the suit has confirmed his client's suspicions that calling the police will only be used by the city against business owners.
You're like, 'wait a minute, we are calling the police and reporting the criminals,'" Neal told Hatfield. "And then [city officials] are using that stat to presume our guilt under the statute that we aren't stopping crime?"

Don't know about this case in particular, nor does any poster, but there are many businesses in Houston and all cities that turn a blind eye to crime on their premises.

They should be held accountable

I know the lawyer in this case. Nice guy. Aggie. But wouid not say he takes the Aggie code of honor seriously if you know what I mean.

The state can fix this as it is the state that determines the jurisdiction and powers of the city governments.

what is there to fix? the legislature has passed laws allowing cities, counties to sue when a property becomes a "common nuisance."

the city used to use this law frequently to shut down strip clubs.
MouthBQ98

They can determine the condition of the use of that option at the state level, if it is being abused at the local level to persecute businesses that report criminal activity that makes the city look bad politically.
