Know any kids who have to stay local because no money to go off to school?

I have heard of several with change of plans.

Will this create more needing student loans and then bigger problems down the road if family decides to let kid go off to school , and borrow to make it work?

Where do you cut frills? Less car? Less on the sports pass? Less trips home? Less beer money? (LOL)

My 18 yr old is forgoing his acceptance to A&M and will work toward his welding certs. Done in 3 semesters at the Rellis campus and will be working while attending classes. A fraction of the cost. When he told us his plan, he mentioned the cost of a college degree.

Going to be an interesting country in about 15-20 years when we have a society where all of the people that know how to make things work will be white men, Hispanic men, and a few black men and the vast majority of the college educated will be minorities and white women who won't know how to do anything but be a corporate drone.

The implications to society are pretty substantial. With a 60-40 female to male ratio in college right now that's only going to get more divergent.

I have to pay lawyer wages to folks who can weld stainless and pass a 100% inspection.

Yep. We searched far and wide for a local company that could weld aluminum for our subsea structures, and the guy we found is a cool black guy in his early 30's, drives a jacked up HD truck, and has his own business. He bought a warehouse in the sketchy part of Houston with an old waterjet, and started cutting metal out to make custom steel bumpers. Then O&G started calling and he realized how much he could make from that.

Then he expanded his business network and found more welders that could do more exotic metals. Now he's doing subsea structures.

Fabrication is the way and you'll always be able to find a job, whether solo or for a company. Get him a truck with a mobile welder on it, and he'll be able to go anywhere for emergency fixes while making big money.

I'd also recommend he takes some courses and gets experience with NDE, and maybe even proof testing. That's easy money. Holloway Houston charges $3k for a few proof tests and NDE dye penetrant, which takes all of 4 hrs total.

My son is starting at Galveston in the Fall in Marine Transportation, Minor in Maritime Business. He took Welding his last 2 years in HS though and actually was on a team of 4 that won the State Championship. He has just a couple of things he needs to complete to get his certification. I'd love to find a way he can do some welding while he is in school for extra cash. I also think it would be a great skill to use later on as he will have a lot of time off (It's a "half on, half off" industry). It's not cheap to do MART (has to do a Summer Cruise every year for an extra $14k on top of tuition) but he will get a License and it is worth a lot. Still, I like the idea of him having some additional skills to fall back on. Have him taking some Community College classes this Summer to have the option of either graduating a Semester early or being able to do an Internship.

That said we are definitely looking at ways to cut expenses. He is doing the SSMP program so he will get $8k per year as a scholarship from the Navy to effectively do Reserve work after graduation (and get a Commission). He's worked hard to save money for a 4x4 Truck (he bought his first car that's a sedan that he worked and saved for) but worried about gas prices and the market for trucks is still not great.

I've been prepping both my boys that they need to be ready for a difficult world they will be coming in to and hard times are ahead. Get skills with value and be smart with your money and make smart decisions in your life. A lot of folks are going to be cannon fodder from the Millennial/Gen Z age group as they are wasting their youth with no plan for dealing with the real world and the real world of the next 40 years may be a really rough ride unfortunately.

It's a very niche field, not a lot of people know about it. We sell software to the Inland Marine Industry and other related industries.

I'm really happy for him, it's a great field and you can do a lot of things with that License. It's actually the highest paying major in the State. He's an outdoor kid that is disciplined, loves the sea, and isn't afraid to work so it fits him. He's not sure what type of boat/industry he wants to focus on but there are a lot of options as there is a lot of demand and only 7 schools in the country where you can get the degree and they are all small.

And women are having a hard time now trying to find a "good man" to potentially marry for men are getting fed up with all the BS and feminism that they bring.

The future looks a lot worse.
The problem is you have women who are getting more and more selective as they have been brought up with fantasy expectations about life. They are told they can do anything which sounds great but they are not told that there are consequences to choices. The natural instinct for women is to want to "marry up" to a man who is a better provider than they are and who has at least equal or superior education to them. With more and more women going to college and more and more men not that's creating a divide.

You also have more and more women waiting later and later to even think about marriage. They also have unrealistic expectations about men while ignoring their own faults. Marriage is a Yin and Yang. With birth control, abortion, and a society that does less and less to celebrate having kids you end up with many waiting until it is too late. Men aren't as naturally drawn to marriage and family, especially younger men. With sex being easily available it makes it even less of a priority for them. It's no surprise that the demo that is MOST in favor of abortion is men from 18-35, not women. Of course young men are going to be drawn to consequence free sex. Most men also don't grow up taking care of babies or understanding the wonder and blessing that they are, it usually isn't something they realize until they actually become a father. Women are far more naturally predisposed to spending time and caring for children even if they aren't planning to have them, literally their body is pushing them in that direction from puberty onward.

If you look at basic biology women develop faster than men and their peak fertility period is 18-25. That's also when most women are most attractive. It's designed that way so they can attract a mate who is willing to give up their freedom to be with that woman and have children. When you have women waiting into their 30's before they are even thinking about marriage because they found it so easy to attract men when they were younger they start to wake up to the reality that their best window has passed them by and they have to work harder to find a mate. Men are naturally attracted to the most fertile women in that 18-25 range from a pure physical standpoint. Since most men aren't looking for a wife to support them they don't usually care much about how much a woman makes or what her career looks like. Thus the problem continues to get worse.

It's a huge problem that is being ignored completely, if anything we seem hell bent as a society to make it worse. The only thing I can do is know I have raised my boys to understand the world as it is and not as a fantasy. I just hope they can find wives someday that have been raised the same way.
