On June 7, 2019, Abbott signed SB 21, or Tobacco 21, which raises the minimum legal age in Texas to purchase tobacco from 18 years to 21 years old.
How can Republicans square in their mind that it's okay to buy an AR15 at 18 but not a pack of smokes or *gasp* A VAPE PEN?!

Smoking isn't a right specified in the Constitution.

Owning a gun is a right specified in the Constitution.

Edit: Added some clarification.
"If you will not fight for right when you can easily win without blood shed; if you will not fight when your victory is sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival. There may even be a worse case. You may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves." - Sir Winston Churchill

The hell are you talking about? The Tobacco law is a State issue, and Republicans are limiting access. Wait, what side are you arguing here?
My question, once again is how are Republicans okay with their leaders limiting access to adults in this case, but not others?

What do you think about eliminating drinking age instead? Legalizing pot? Fyntenal? Oxicodone? Meth?

It's a public health management decision.

And it's impossible to revolt against a tyrannical government with cigarettes.

The only law I can see passing is for all gun sales to be at 21 like Florida did. Raising the age would have prevented these two recent shootings. Usually when gun control laws are proposed, it doesn't stop the shooting but this law would. Handguns are already at 21 so this just makes sense. An exception can be given to military, cops, fire, etc

Can you seriously not see the difference and deduce the reason?

If you bump up the age requirement, you need to make exceptions for:
those in the military
those in law enforcement
those with parent/guardian consent
those completing a LTC-equivalent training

Any age restrictions should be made at the state level.

My post isn't about raising the gun age, it's about lowering the smoking age. The fact that this group immediately jumps to the other assumption says way more about you than me. Good night fellas

Raising the age *may* have stopped him from legally purchasing those guns, but in no way would it have prevented a deranged kid from a broken home from causing mass damage if he wanted to

Democrats let you smoke at 21 and get irreversible gender reassignment surgery at 5.

At what age are you afforded the right to determine what you ingest? I always thought that was adulthood, which is legally 18.

The 21 rule is idiotic and anti-freedom, but that's Abbott for you. And his cronies like Paxton won't/don't fight against the anti-freedom.

Well I agree that we should decide what constitutes an adult. If you can vote or enlist then you should be able to own a gun or buy beer. Personally I'd be fine making 21 the legal age to do any of those things.

OP; we give 17 year olds guns, 3 hots and a cot in the Army... you can technically get married at 16 with consent.

1st it's a right and smoking is not; as pointed out.

2nd why is it okay for a 17 year old to be issued a gun and potentially marched off to war but not get one at home?

3rd for the 16 year old who gets married - is he not allowed to defend his home and family?

We should lower the age to 16

That doesn't happen and Texas Republican legislature/executive signed the bill in question.

Their body their choice. Stay the *****out of other people's business for a legal product. When I was in the Army, it was legal for a soldier to go to the Class VI store and buy hard liquor, which you couldn't do in the civilian world. It's my opinion that if you're old enough to fight and possibly die for your country, you're old enough to drink or smoke.

It's dumb to have one age to sign contracts, a different age to drink, another age to buy a gun, etc.

There should be one age of responsibility, make it 18, 19, or 21. That should be the age for signing legal contracts, voting, buying a rifle, buying a pistol, getting married, smoking, vaping, deciding you gender, get drafted, etc.

If an 18 year old is to irresponsible to purchase a long gun, for example, perhaps he is too irresponsible to vote.

It's a great point.

Adults should be treated as adults in every aspect.

This nonsense of some things for 16, some things for 18, some things for 21, and some things for 25........ it's stupid.

Either someone is an adult or not.

If we push adulthood to 21, then voting gets pushed back as well. We all know they will never push the voting age back.

Yes, a psycho that was about to kill 19 children would absolutely have been stopped from doing so if they were breaking the law in getting a gun. I mean there is just no other way to obtain them than legally purchasing one so I guess he would have just gone home and changed his mind out of fear of committing one more crime on his way to commit mass murder.

Changing it to 21 may have delayed these shootings, but wouldnt have prevented them.

It's kind of fun watching the statists on the right fight the statists on the left (and vice versa) and seeing them both totally drowning in their hypocrisies.
