This excerpt from DPS briefing is telling.

Quote:

McCraw said the door in which Ramos entered the school had been propped open by a teacher there prior to him crashing a vehicle near the building.

Plenty of blame to go around in the LEO response. BUT with closed secure buildings the shooter likely had only a brick building to shoot at. This is an issue the school administration failed on. https://www.foxnews.com/live-news/uvalde-texas-school-shooting

Why would a door be propped open? Was the AC out?

Last week of school, very small school district, old school that has outdoor hallways.

If we can invest trillions in foreign proxy wars, we can invest in the safety of our schools. As usual, leadership fails. Imagine politicians will **** all over the 2nd amendment, blame long rifles and this will happen again. Then FBI will continue to target concerned parents and other made up boogie men.

Also, everyone is blaming the Uvalde PD, but dont realize how small it is.

Smoke break or to run out to the car, so you dont have to walk around to the main door.

My understanding is that it was propped open up just once, but twice by the same teacher inside of a 30 minute period. In addition, apparently he was able to shoot through windows into classrooms

Stuck outsdie shooting through brick walls and windows leaves him a hell of a lot more exposed with far greater limitations on his field of fire.

As opposed to barricaded inside a single classroom where he executed everyone in the room.

B-1,

Might not be so far fetched.

Schools chief of police was in charge at time of shooting, Texas DPS says

Texas Department of Public Safety Director Steven McCraw revealed Friday that the chief of police of the Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District was the on-scene commander at the time of the Robb Elementary School shooting on Tuesday.

Know Uvalde PD is catching the flack, but the IC gets to call the tune.

You would be surprised by how often school doors are propped open by teachers or coaches for convenience.
Yeah, well, sometimes nothing is a real cool hand

Not just schools. Think about your offices. Government buildings. Gyms. All kinds of places.

We spend all that money installing security vestibules and establishing check in procedures, and it just takes one minute of carelessness to undo it. Hard to plan around people being human.

The lasting survivors guilt here is going to unfortunately be tremendous.

For the teacher that did what thousands of others have done and propped open a door for a few minutes to grab something from a car so as to save time and not have to walk the long way.

For the police decision to wait before confronting the shooter.

For all the teachers and students who made it out alive.

The pain and suffering from this event seem truly unlimited.

May God provide his mercy to all.

The thing that I don't get is why wasn't the school in lockdown at that point? I understand that sometimes doors would be propped open on a normal day, but they had reports of the shooter fleeing after shooting his grandmother and crashing right by the school. He also stopped to fire at people at the nearby funeral home before going into the school. Why wasn't the school in lockdown with every exterior door checked and locked and every classroom door locked before he came into the school? It sounds like they should have had time to do that.

This isn't Mayberry.

Uvalde PD is big enough to have, arm, and (supposedly train) a SWAT team. Residents should be able to assume they don't just play with military toys while skipping the "and tactics" part of that acronym.

Back during the height of the Vid, my favorite teacher said that they had teachers at her HS sneaking in the side door so they didn't have to go through the front door and the Covid protocols.

They are reporting that they had a 3 minute warning that there was a gunman in the area too. Shouldn't take more than 3 minutes to secure the building by closing doors unlesss they were at recess

There's going to be a lot of blame to go around, and that's fine, but the lion's share still falls squarely on the shoulders on the law enforcement that was there, especially the ones that were there first.

Yep, especially when the armed school Resource Officer was NOT AT THE SCHOOL, for some reason...

I'm racking my brain to remember any kind of back door at that school. The wing my son's class was in had no such thing, only doors to the outside at each room. There might have been something in another wing closer to the office. Uvalde must have been on a building bi binge at one tome decades ago. Their elementary schools all looked alike when we lived there.

Even then, once he got inside, how did he get into a classroom? My experience (a decade or more ago) was that the teacher locked the classroom door....

Did the teacher fail to do that as well or did their doors not lock?

This. I was at my son's high school for a meeting two weeks ago. Band hall door was propped open. It made me uncomfortable when I saw it, but I didn't say anything that day. I emailed the principal about it on Wednesday.

As much as people (teachers, kids, parents) say they are scared to be at school, they just don't live every day expecting this to happen.

There is no inside. The classes open outdoors.
