In 2018 Ted Cruz lent his Senate campaign $260,000. The law was that maximum of $250K in donations can be used to repay debt contributed by candidate. Cruz campaign repaid the maximum allowable $250K to Ted Cruz, but that left Cruz in the hole for $10K so he sued. It went all the way to the Supreme Court who ruled yesterday that capping loan repayments with funds received from donors limits free speech. So Ted Cruz campaign can now use donor money to pay off the $10K loan to himself plus interest. Ted Cruz made money by running for Senate.

Your concern is not touching.
"If you will not fight for right when you can easily win without blood shed; if you will not fight when your victory is sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival. There may even be a worse case. You may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves." - Sir Winston Churchill

If you have to make a loan from your personal account then I'm not sure how much gamesmanship there can be. They can't repay more than the loan based on what I read. Interest charges are a bit of a question and possibly room for shenanigans there.

Was he asking for anything more than full repayment of the loan he gave to the campaign?

It isn't like he *****d his family out to the Chinese Communist Party and Vladimir Putin for 10% of the cut.

It sounds like he followed the law to the letter and achieved resolution of this issue through the legal system, including a stamp of approval by the Supreme Court. That would be the polar opposite of corrupt.

Essentially this allows for more citizens who aren't wealthy to run for office with less risk of financial ruin. If you want to only be represented by rich people, political families, and other folks who have natural high name recognition because of celebrity then you hate this bill. The current law based on McCain/Feingold is the incumbent protection program that only wants one of the 3 folks mentioned above to win.

That's how it can get shady. Incumbents win 90% of the time. I lend myself $500K at high interest rate. I win. Some organization contributes lots of money to me for political favor. I get my money back plus interest.

Dan Scott,

How does Ted Cruz getting repaid a $260,000 loan by his campaign constitute an act making it easier for corrupt politicians to operate?

SCOTUS heard the case and obviously did not agree with your opinion.

So where is the corruption here when this is clearly a loan being called in by the party making the loan?

I think I've started at least 1 on insider trading. Also others have as well. Feel free to search and read those.

A few points here.

First, paying yourself back for loans to your campaign is not "making money". It's being reimbursed.

Second, the provision of campaign finance law in question was structured in such a way that it favored incumbents with an existing fund-raising apparatus. Cruz challenged this specifically to enable challengers to fight on more even terms - knowing that he himself would be an incumbent when this was decided.

Third, Cruz has been talking about this for a long time especially on his podcast; he's advertising it, not trying to sweep it under the rug. He intentionally loaned his campaign more than the "permitted" amount to give himself standing to file.

Fourth, it's part of a broader strategy to encourage more turnover in congress along with the constitutional amendment he proposed to limit terms.

Fifth, campaign spending should be closely scrutinized for the presence of kickbacks, family-and-friends "consulting" fees to launder reimbursed funds, and other forms of corruption and theft. Nothing I said above should be construed to argue otherwise.

Cruz did it with the purpose of getting it to Supreme Court to challenge the rule. He won. Good for him. It opens the door for more corruption in my opinion.

Wake me when they arrest and fine Hilldawg Clinton for the most massive pay for play scheme in the history of this country. The Clinton Crime Foundation and Clinton Global Initiative raised an estimated $2 billion and only about 13% went to charity. She pocketed the rest to pay her campaign staff off the books while she was SecState and was busted using a bunch of it for personal expenses like Chelsea's wedding.

But Ted Cruz will be corrupted by $10k.
We may not always get what we want. We may not always get what we need. Just so we don't get what we deserve.

Specifically regarding interest, the FEC has previously ruled that it has to be a commercially reasonable rate, so there's not really a loophole there.
