Is government backed college worth it? Or do used cars salesmen, roughnecks, electricians, plumbers, linemen ect ect deserve subsidized school?

Anything the government touches turns to excrement.

Government shouldn't be in the game of subsidizing college because they have shown within the last 12 years that all they will accomplish is to make it worse. Their owning of 90% of school loan debt has completely distorted the market and the actual supply and demand of what we need in this country as far as talent and skills are concerned.

The mentality that everyone has to go to college regardless of ability is absurd and defies basic economics which once again is undefeated as the government ownership of almost all school debt has proven.

Does the degree pay for anything or is it the work ethic that ultimately pays the bills?

a degree is a credential. There are many roles in society that require credentials. Being a plumber, welder, etc requires a credential too. A plumber shouldn't operate on a person much like a surgeon probably shouldn't run pex.

The government should not be in the business of buying people their credentials.

The degree might get you in the door, from that point is all work ethic, networking, etc...

That's what worked for me in the 90's, I dunno if it's worth it now unless you want a career that requires it, like an MD, MBA...

.gov should subsidize nothing, since it's $30 Trillion in debt.

The problem is that people aspire to be someone with success however, they fail to plan out how to achieve that success. Just because one goes to college does not guarantee anything and when people leave their futures to chance, which is like gambling, odds are that they are going to fail.

Having it easy just means that you will be paying hard in the future.

I think a surgeon could run pex, copper might be a different story.

Starts in the high schools.

When I was in HS, there were trade classes. And there were clubs. Woodworking, carpentry, plumbing, auto mechanics, welding, etc. Trade skills were part of public education. If not actually in classes, still available through after school clubs.

But then he wouldn't get a license to pass judgement on everyone else.

My daughter, who is on her way to being a licensed electrician, just told me she will make $30 an hour at her new assignment, and if she had her license she would make $50 an hour. She has been an electrical apprentice for 3 1/2 years and is within 6-9 months of being licensed, here in Texas. She started apprenticing right out of high school.

Our school district in East Texas started some.of these programs this school year. My 8th grade daughter is taking a medical science path and will be a certified vet tech when she graduates high school. Her plan is to become a vet so she will be able to gain. Experience part time while going to college. Other students will be MAs or other entry level medical personnel. They also have started automotive and other tracks. Our school district does a lot of things wrong in my opinion, but I'm glad they started this.

Is a college education needed or worth it? YES I believe so. You are far more likely to make more money with a college degree. Worst thing that happened is when government took over college loans. The government guaranteed payment so colleges kept increasing prices. You can't default on college debt if you don't pay you can't buy a house, etc. the income gap will widen as government continues to manage the loans. People who have their parents get them out of college with no debt will become owners of stuff, houses, cars, investments and those in debt will rent…this is part of their great reset strategy.

College can be worth it IF you pursue a high in demand Professional Degree

But the days of a BA being valuable simply because only 1 in 5 Americans had one are over.

Most BAs now are completely worthless debt saddles and you would be much better off pursuing a skilled trade

Skills are the path to the middle class now. Get 'em at college or trade school or start your own business and just work harder than everyone else

I don't think my bachelors degree was worth it, but I had to get it to start medical school. The entire idea of a liberal arts degree is a racket designed to keep money flowing into higher education. College level coursework should be focused to the background info needed to learn a skill or provide a service and should not waste the students time and money.

I could go for government backed and funded education if it were a true meritocracy based on aptitude and scores. No advocacy.

My small town Texas high school still taught woodworking, auto repair, had programs for students to get an early childhood education cert for childcare work, cosmetology classes leading to licensure and a cna/ma program when I was there. I think that's a good thing.

Degree has nothing to do with success. Every degree type has representatives from team unsuccessful.

I also think that part of the problem with the modern BA market is recognizing who you are and why you're in college

If you are a scion of a wealthy family and you'll inherit Daddy's company/money one day no matter what, then college is 4 years of social networking for you at fraternity parties, then the traditional BA in film or any other silly pointless major and just "following your passion" with a gentleman's C is fine

If you're a child of the middle class looking to remain there (family has no business or money for you to inherit) or the child of a poor family looking to become middle class or higher, then college needs to be a practical decision focused on a high paying STEM degree with academics placed before social activity

Children of those two classes pursuing a BA in film with a C average leave in a WORSE financial position than when they entered

My buddy from high school dropped out of college and became a master electrician. He's paying his guys $25-$35/hour doing +$120k sales per month. He had no business being in college to begin with.
